Dear Polly Nomial,

How do you successfully cope with the 2+2+2 configuration of this and other MDG titles? I would like to pick up a few, but have always been turned off by the prospect of rearranging my loudspeakers.

I must confess that I have not experimented with MDG's recommended 2+2+2 positioning but this is one of their more successful attempts at satisfying both the "normal" 5.1 layout and their idea. The most successful so far for 5(.1) listeners is their Diabelli variations (on the sub-label Audiomax) but the playing in no way matches the quality of the recording accorded to the performance.

This disc is a great improvement over the earlier Haydn disc (partly because the playing is less extreme but mainly due to the resonance no longer overwhelming orchestral detail) but is not reference standard.

The Mendelssohn piano concerto disc is also pretty good in the concertos but the solo works that follow demand a well maintained piano - something that is missing there!

Other discs that I have are largely closer to the quality of this disc rather than the first Haydn disc - none of the discs would be ideal for either performance or recording issues (frustratingly I have yet to hear one that manages to satisfy me on both aspects) but there is some very tempting repertoire on this label that I find hard to imagine being otherwise available on SACD.

For me, this label can be recommended with warnings.

I also don't rearrange my speakers. I simply lower the level of the center channel and sub channel a bit so as to avoid any potential imaging problems. So far I've had good (pretty much 4 channel) results with the Mozart Salzburg Sacred Music and the Respighi discs.

The 2+2+2 is a no-go for my setup (5.1) at home: I use a subwoofer for the lower octaves since my speakers are not full range (on purpose). For me it is not practical with 2+2+2, even though it may sound very well.
