Discussion: Fred Hersch: Personal Favorites

Thanks to the Amazon review quoted on this site I've become aware that this new Chesky release is in fact not a new recording, but a compilation from older Chesky CDs from the early 90s. I had bought it thinking it was from the great series of "New York sessions", and when I listened to it last December I didn't notice the different recording sessions. The sound is a bit less "airy" than the new Chesky recordings though.

The booklet doesn't indicate recording dates or the names of the original albums. Only the new liner notes by Fred Hersch make it clear that it's a compilation.

The disc is recommended, but Chesky could have avoided the confusion, especially for those who already own the original CDs.
