Posted my response to the article....

Says here HDMI 1.2, not 1.1:

http://www.hdmi.org/consumer/faq.asp#q6_9

"HDMI has supported One Bit Audio format, such as SuperAudio CD's DSD (Direct Stream Digital), since version 1.2 (released in August, 2005). Customers interested in this feature should make sure that their device supports SACD."

Thanks anyway for the plug.

Soundboy-

Read your response...tried to locate the information on the possibility of an Enigma release on SACD. Couldn't locate it on their main website. Can you share any further info?

Thanks a lot!!!

Go to Enigma's official website and look under the news item for October 5, 2006...or follow the below link (half way down the page)

Stephen,

You are right about HDMI v1.2. However, they aren't any HDMI v1.2 compatible SACD players on the market. Regarding the Oppo 970HD, it's the first SACD-capable player that can transmit SACD digitally via HDMI. Now, according to Oppo, the 970HD will downconvert the DSD bitsream to 88.2 MHz PCM in order to accomplish the HDMI transfer. The 970HD actually does the same conversion for its analog outputs (this was confirmed by Oppo's customer service dept.) While I have not heard the 970HD with my own ears, this player's sound quality has been widely praised by both professional reviewers and actual owners. Perhaps that conversion is quite transparent.

There was one, which was the last Samsung's SACD-compatible DVD player: DVD-HD1080.

I'm a bit confused here:

The PS3 supports HDMI 1.3 ... right?

There's currently no receivers that support HDMI 1.2 or 1.3 but they're coming later this year ... right?

In the meantime, players (like the Oppo) can down-convert to PCM for HDMI 1.1 for which there is support ... right?

Does the PS3 down-convert? Or will you need a receiver rated for HDMI 1.3 to access the multichannel signal? I guess just having a receiver rated for HDMI 1.3 isn't enough, it will still have to have silicon to decode the DSD stream ... right?

I believe Panasonic's SA-XR57 receiver supports HDMI 1.2. However, Panasonic is also one of the few DVD-A only manufacturers as well.

Denon has announced its 2007 receivers will be compatible with HDMI 1.3. Not sure about the PS3's HDMI capability.

I'm afraid (but not certain) the record company has decided to release the 5.1 mix on DVD (Video) instead of SACD. That one's available in the meantime.
