Ignore the PS3? At your peril.

It's not a matter of prejudice. To take an obvious example, I am a PS3 owner. The PS3 was the first BD/SACD player and I was wondering what would be next.

I was just joking. I too look forward to the next gen, but not whilst the PS3 keeps improving and wowing me.

I had good hopes for Pioneer but apparently they still haven't managed to combine SACD, DVD and BD in a single drive. Of the four new Home Cinema Systems they've announced for this seasons, three support BD and the other SACD. See http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/content/press/news/lxHomeCinemaSystems.html

When the PS3 was first launched, there was talk of a "hi-fi" version. Not heard anything since, really.

It would need to improve on the current PS3 by having a display so you don't need tv on to see info, have DSD output, improved universal media playback, and of course, hi-fi style and level of build.

Denon had mentioned it intended to market a SACD-compatible Blu-ray player. However, now that the company (along with McIntosh, Marantz, etc.) has been sold.....

Afterdawn states that the BDP-S350 and BDP-S550 from Sony will support SACD, no word on DSD support though.

I have also read speculation that Oppo's Blu-ray player may support SACD (DSD-HDMI) and DVD-Audio.

Not sure where they have got their information from. This Sony press release makes no mention of SA-CD (it mentions pretty much every other disc format):

I hope they do include SA-CD on these machines (or the new ES model that should be out before the end of the year).

Well, three months on and the product is officially introduced but no sign of SACD playback (or DVD-Audio for that matter). Just all the regular ROM, recordable and rewritable variants of BD, DVD and CD.

Well, the Panasonic BD-10A does DVD-A and does it quite well. But one does wonder whether Blu-ray will become the hi-rez format of the future with so few releases of both SACD and DVD-A at present. Anyway I'll be keeping all mine.

with so few releases of ... SACD ... at present

The SA-CD release rate has been largely unchanged for years ... which makes me wonder whether some people know how to use the resources this site provides (not just the forum) or not.
