I have only heard the first symphony in this series as yet, and I love it. I had forgotten what a wonderful piece of music this is. On LP I had both Ormandy and Mehta but Litton and his Dallas forces surpass them. Gorgeous music, inspired by Brahms and Dvorak. Lovely tunes and that scherzo is a gem. The trio with its waltz reminding of a Scandinavian summer night or the second movement of the Dvorak string serenade. A treat - and now for the second symphony. I also heard Central Park in the Dark and it is lovely. I love those chords of paralell fifths that Bartok also used in his second piano concerto, second movement.

Question about the 2nd Symphony:

Was the new critical edition that Schermerhorn recorded with for Naxos used?

Hi Seth,
more a preview than a review.

Critical edition..don´t know yet. But the performance of the second symphony is the best ever on disc. Litton has captured the nervousness of the idiom, the Tchaikovskyan horns and the glorious tunes. Great orchestral playing.

"Tchaikovskyan"

That's not what I wanted to hear. That's how Bernstein conducted the 2nd, and everyone seems to mimic him. Schermerhorn's performance sounds more, well, Ivesian. The tempo and dynamic markings in the new critical edition he used makes a big difference, especially in the last movement.

edvin, what is the sound like? have you heard the MC mix yet?

The horns that open the fourth movement sound Tchaikovskyan, as indeed they should. I haven´t heard the Naxos recording so I can´t back up my statement that this is the best second ever on disc.

Terence, the sound is wonderful. A warm and full sound. The rears are discreet, adding presence and warmth.

No applause after symphonies 1 & 2 and probably not at all. Thanks for that Hyperion.

I pre-ordered both discs from Amazon (through this site), and the estimated shipping date keeps getting pushed back. Anyone else having this problem?
