Derek - thanks very much. I've only quickly scanned across the article, but it looks quite interesting. When I get a bit more time, I'll read it in detail.

I might just be tempted to give this album a go - just might.

Personally, I couldn't imagine the Beatles albums/tracks being mixed in MCH-audio in any other way than subtle. The "Love" album is something slightly different though, and I was able to accept how it was presented the first moment I heard it - not that it has a particularly aggressive mix. That is an album to impress though, on so many different levels.

I returned mine today, but if you're interested in a stereo cut with good video quality, it's worth getting. At £34, I didn't feel it was worthwhile as I was interested in the surround mix, which as we now know, was deliberately restrained, sadly....

Derek, in approximately a week and a half we have what is referred to as Black Friday and cyber Monday in the States which is when all our retail stores (and online retailers) reduce prices drastically on merchandise.....Blu rays and CDs included (SACDs, almost NEVER). Guaranteed that the Beatles 1+ will be drastically reduced which may make it a prudent purchase.

You saw what happened to Moondance. It used to be around $70 US when first announced.

Which is why I'm holding out for the Fleetwood Mac Tusk boxset. I first want to read reviews and also ensure it's MLP DVD~A 5.1 and not DTS.

Paying ridiculous amounts for these boxsets is becoming ludicrous if all one wants is the 5.1 surround release. And pre~ordering at these high prices when in a few months the prices come WAY down should be a further incentive to adopt a wait and see approach.

Unfortunately, the same did not apply for the Jethro Tull Aqualung boxset with the brilliant BD~A 5.1. It's becoming pretty rare and is still commanding a pretty penny.

I wonder why the multichannel program is so zealously sought after - and consequently criticized - whereas the Beatles' music was mostly recorded in 4 tracks and never intended to be MC-mixed. This MC is just a trick, like the Columbia 5.1 mix of Miles Davis: Kind of Blue created from 3 tracks... though it sounds really good, a trick is still a trick.

So why being so discontent while we should be happy to get AT LAST a decent stereo mix of the Beatles ?

The stereo on the DVD is 16/48 in case anyone is curious.

You ask some good questions Anthony and I'll do my best to answer.

I like multichannel music when the surround mix is properly discrete, so when it was announced that #1s would come with a 5.1 soundtrack, with the exception of the chronologically earlier tracks, I expected the surround mix to be more discrete; hence my disappointment.

Even if The Beatles recorded most of their music on 4 tracks, that has no bearing on how it should be heard - as David Hume suggests: you can't get ought from is.

I'm not too fussed about a greatest hits release - even if it's in hi-res stereo - because I've already got lots of The Beatles' albums in stereo: including the 2009 CDs, the 2012 vinyl boxset and the 2014 mono vinyl boxset, so feel I'm covered on the stereo front.

What appealed to me about this release first and foremost was the opportunity to hear The Beatles in surround sound, but it simply didn't deliver, sadly...

Derek, you MORE than adequately have the Beatle's catalogue covered.

As I previously mentioned, the Beatle's 1+ videos have very little REPLAY value, as far as I'm concerned and could also be viewed as a "cash grab" on Universal's part to reimburse themselves for the billions spent on acquiring the Capitol Records popular music catalogue.

Had more been done with 'creating' new 5.1 audio tracks for this release, it might've represented a better value, but, alas, NOT the case.

I'd much rather have a Criterion 4K remastered 5.1 or even 4.0 BD~V of the Beatles' 1970 movie "Let It Be" which IS sadly absent.....and which, IMHO, is the BEST of the Beatle's Movies.

Ah, there's another Beatles film??? I've never even heard of it let alone seen it Ralph. If only Criterion would Let It Be released...

Let It Be was the Beatles swan song. It was filmed LIVE atop the roof of Apple Studios. Tensions among the Beatles were high and you know the ole saying.....a lot of great art is created out of angst.

I had it on Laserdisc and am patiently awaiting its release on BD~V.

Ah, I didn't realise that footage had been released as a film; I'll join the queue...

Probably from a ragged looking Japanese bootleg copy.
