Ive never personally heard this player in action, however how will it be connected? If its going HDMI to the receiver, then the reciever will ultimately determine the sound quality. If its via analog ( stereo or 6 channel ) then of course that will be determined by the internal DACs within the 610 itself and given it is a budget player its own internal decoding might be found wanting compared to pricier players. That said the reviews I've read about this model suggest it does a good job overall given its price point

I like it [Marantz SA-11s2], it's a very refined player with exquisite highs. It's also made my CD collection listenable, even if they don't reach the level of better recorded SA-CDs. As with all sources, overall system matching is imperative. Worth a listen.
Thanks you again everyone, especially Zeus, for your advice RE a replacement for my Shanling. I now have a big silvery Marantz at the far end of the livingroom, spinning Beethoven: String Quartets Opp. 18 No. 4, 130 & 133 - Fry Street Quartet on default settings. I only have my Sony DVP-CX985V for comparison: the Marantz makes the Sony sound like a redbook CD (shallow bottom, low ceiling). My wife will be away next week, so I'll put it to the test then.
I did have an option on a used P8i, but the owner wanted $6k and simply didn't respond to my offer of $4k ($1k more than the Marantz). At least the Marantz has a warranty and service centres on this side of the King's herring pond.
My disc library is open to the forum: feel free to suggests discs for test spins.
Thanks again, Beagle of Westcock

At the risk of offending some tin-eared theoreticians, if have a copy of this give it a spin:
Copland: Appalachian Spring, El Salon Mexico etc. - Bernstein
Don't expect bass to firm up on the player for about a month.

The final result is the same, but I suspect that it is the audio cortex of my brain which will settle in after a month. I still remember how brash my latest speakers at first seemed, then they 'burned in' -- or rather my brain accepted their input as "just how it ought to sound".
Either way, I expect that I will soon forget how sweet the late Shanling sang....

Speakers and headphones might change their sound slightly when new, as the elastic materials in their surrounds gets stretched and starts to age (is it worth feeding them pink noise for a month worth the trouble is another matter). "Burn in" with solid state electronics and cables is a marketing ploy the make the buyer keep them long enough to get used to the change of sound, or no change in sound.

How would you know, AmonRa......are YOU a cable or a solid state component?
And since when is "burn in" a marketing ploy? Seems to me, burning in a component 24/7 would be a boon to the utility company NOT the audio salesperson.

I does prevent returns. Most stores have a 30-day satisfaction guarantee and if something gets returned the salesperson losses their commission. If you come back after a couple of days and say "I don't like how this sounds", they will say to "give it at least a couple of weeks to break-in". Their hope is that it starts to sound better or you get used to the sound.
