Japan has a space issue. Therefor the low interest in space intensive multichannel systems, I guess. Even though a stereo system should have some room as well and my surround system probably uses only around 12 square meters. But even this is a lot in Tokyo I guess. And if I had not the rear speakers a wall directly behind my chair would not matter and reduce the space to around ten. Just my two cents :-)
I think Japan's 2 chnnael infatuation has less to do with space and more to do with their fanatical way of hifi-dom. e.g. normal to close their eyes when listening to music (good idea, actually), and their love affair with Tannoy speakers (another good idea).

There's a similar situation in Hong Kong. If you visit Hong Kong's audiophile websites, you'll find people with multi-channel surround capability....but it's only used for home theater purposes. Even with tiny rooms, audiophiles there often have 2 separate systems....one for music and one for home theater.

Mark Levinson no.512
After many years Mark Levinson (Madrigal Digital, aka Harman Kardon) joins SACD format, and I am very happy for it. But, why so late...?

Many hi-end manufacturers simply stayed away from SACD, not worth the trouble it is a dead format after all, but the damn thing refuses to die and we can expect to see more SACD players from these reluctant folks.
