Analogue posted a review today on this site regarding the reissued SHM~SACD of the Rolling Stones' "Goats Head Soup" and according to his review, he feels that these are NOT the original full priced DSD masters originally released.

Besides being packaged in RBCD cases (not the mini LP replicas), he feels that Universal has "tampered" with the original sonics resulting in an unpleasant sonic experience.

Since I have NOT received my 7 SHM~SACD reissues from CDJapan, as yet, I was wondering if any other posters have experienced any sonic degradation with these reissued SHM~SACDs?

The reason I bring this up: Analogue is usually spot on with his reviews...and he also indicated that the other SHM~SACD reissues he received were also not up to par, as well.

I don't know….have ordered 4 SHM-SACDs, one of them in plastic jewel case, the others released in these new Mini Lp style packaging.

A member at Steve Hoffman forums has listened to one of the new Beach Boys, it sounded better than he thought possible.

…by the way, I have the original SHM-SACD of Goats Head Soup, it is a flat transfer from the master, and sound like that.

I also have the original SHM~SACD of Goats Head Soup and it was based on the 2002 ABKCO DSD Master. Sounds fine to me, as well.

Glad to hear the encouraging news regarding the upcoming Beach Boys SHM~SACDs...........wonder how the Analogue Productions mch SACDs will sound? Any news on those, Espen?

All the SHM I have obtained in the past year or so have been exceptional, this is really a gold standard series.

I find it very hard to believe any of the repressings are anything other than a straight repress of the earlier SHM in cheaper packaging. I would seriously doubt they would go through the trouble and expense of remastering to sell at a lower price.

Some of the earlier classical SHMs were from PCM sources, I believe. So, it is possible for them to use dubious sources. But, the Stones SHM has already been released once before and received positive reviews. It doesn't make sense that the second batch wouldn't be the same.

Anyway, I agree with you. The recent Steely Dan SHM-SACDs are excellent..although there were from the more expensive batch. The only SHM that I was disappointed with was Layla. Mediocre sound. The Mch SACD of Layla is better...and it's in surround to boot!!

If you preferred the multichannel version of Layla to the SHM~SACD, perhaps you should be patient, Brett, and see what Analogue Productions accomplishes with their mch SACD remasters of the Beach Boy Catalog.

So far, info is sketchy, at best. Will they be 3 channel or 4.0? I, for one, had NO problem with the DVD~A 5.1 of Pet Sounds although it's received a VERY bad rap over the years. Copies are available rather inexpensively from the various Amazons if you're willing to take a chance.

God only knows......I have two copies!

Yes, some were, and they still sound pretty good as those were from 24/96 sources. EMI catalog titles appearing on SACD in Japan are still 24/96 sourced, and as those are all available as downloads in their native PCM, should be avoided in preference to those downloads.

Not nearly as many PCM sourced SHM than with Analogue Productions, though. Only recently have AP started getting really good DSD transfers out. Interesting how slow even supposed audiophile reissue labels have been to get this right.

Goats Head Soup is not an abkco title and was not one of the 2002 SACD releases. It was a recent DSD transfer.
