Best advice as yet: wait how thing will develop

Waiting is the best advice for the moment. Most people will have to but new equipment for the playback of dsd-content. So they will have to invest in new equipment. For multi-channel playback there is not much choice. ...

...

The momentum for multi-channel playback is over. Five till ten years ago I noticed people took multi-channel homecinema in their living rooms. When I visit them now, the sourround speakers are moved to the coners of the living room.

And what about the speakers? Wirelss speakers ar hot, at the moment. Will they playback dsd? Another thing to wait for.

I'm afraid multi-channel playback will disappear with the optical discs.

Be carefull with what you wish for!

An excellent solution for multi-channel DSD file playback, is the new Sony BDP-S7200 via USB.

Frankly, I find the latter portion of your post hard to believe. I seriously doubt multi-channel sound will disappear as it enhances the listening experience and I believe most know that. I could never return to simple 2-channel listening, which I find quite boring.

For 2-channel listening options however, Dolby Prologic IIx-Music DSP is available to recreate the multi-channel experience. I find that to be quite effective, but not as good as real multi-channel playback.

moi? While I personally could care less about SACD's for my personal use, the labels that produce them are my concern. Almost without exception, SACD producer labels are the smaller independents, and are the most affected by the decline of distribution channels. It is they that most heavily rely on SACD distribution and sales for their income, and most importantly to all of us, their continued existence and production of new recordings..

And for stereo, the Sony HAP-S1 and HAP-Z1ES. For $1,000 and $2,000 respectively they provide a complete stereo music file management, storage, and listening system front end, that simply needs a USB connection for downloading files, including DSD. The HAP-S1 even includes amplifiers.

Yes, the Sony HAP Stereo music servers that play DSD 64 and 128 and upsample PCM to DSD-128 are excellent. I have one in my office at home. You don't really need a USB connection - you can also transfer files to the HAPs via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

Did you ever checkout the hyperion website? Hyperion released the last sa-cd seven years ago. 24 of the 35 initial releases are deleted, 11 still available. Sometimes they had a clearance sale of one of their titles, 2 pound 99 per piece and added a blinking banner: "Please buy me".

Wouldn't that be the real nightmare for the sa-cd producing labels? Having a lot of stock of a product no one wants to buy anymore? Proclaiming the decease of the sa-cd within two years does not look helpfull to me.

Usually, developments in the top end of hifi have a top-down effect on hardware in the lower end of hifi. There's a good chance dsd playback will be more available, with a better playback quality in mainstream hifi within a few years. This could have a possitive effect on the sales of sa-cd.

Let's hope audiophile's investments in dsd-hardware and software will pave the way for more interest in sa-cd's. A win-win situation is still possible, I think.

3 pounds is just slightly under what a label receives eventually from a distributor sale, if and when they're paid. So they're just trying to cover costs by discounted direct sales. You'd be overwhelmed if you knew the amount of unsold stock these smaller labels are carrying, with a declining assurance that they'll ever be sold.

I don't believe SACD sales will disappear in a couple of years, just the smaller labels output of newly recorded music, and the traditional channels through which they're purchased. The acoustic music business is turning into a retread business of recordings. There simply is no longer the sales volume to front a $50,000 recording project that on average will sell 3000 copies. Just look at the decline of newly recorded releases over the last few years, compared with the growth of the reissues.

I do admire your optimism though.

If the two Hyperion titles in my collection are indicative of the overall quality of their product, then there's a very good reason why they no longer produce SA-CD. They simply had no idea what they were doing when it came to multi-channel as sound quality and programme material were terrible.

BTW, don't dismiss the music lovers here as we are a formidable force to be reckoned with. : )
