Someone help me. How can my impression of this release be so different to what has been written?

Honestly? I find it mushy, bloated and dull - and that is after having to turn the level up far higher than I normally have to.

I find it hard to make out a snare drum or cymbal in most tracks. It would make perfect sense if that's the way the master tape sounds, but I have just been through the 2 CD remaster and that sounds completely different (better all round to my ears).

What am I missing? My opinions aren't usually that far from those of others. I daren't write a review yet although I think this release deserves as much honesty as any other.

Read my review Goodwood. My experience is different than yours.

I try to write reviews on everything that I remember to or as time permits. I feel I put time, effort, knowledge and honesty into my reviews.

I like Zeus read reviews as if I was sitting at a round table listening to other people and there experiences.

I have trouble with some audiophile language as it is not how I relate to things in my own life but I am learning.

My impression of the MoFi Pretenders SACD was extremely positive, as well.

As played through my Marantz SA11S3 it sounded fantastic. Great presence, wonderful bass and Chrissie Hynde's voice sounded....well....amazing.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Well that really doesn't make sense.

With my Pioneer SC-LX86 receiver doing all of the number crunching and jitter control of the partnering Pioneer transport there is no presence whatsoever (not something my system can usually be accused of).

Will give it another listen but really not very hopeful. Especially currently enjoying a much more predictable mastering of the 2 CD version.

Well, I've been finding myself playing AF Gold CD version more often than the SACD. I'm using a Marantz SA8005.

So, what's wrong with this picture?

IMHO, the Gold hype (and I myself bought into it) is just that.........it lasts longer than ordinary polycarbonate but as far SQ, it depends on the mastering and source tapes.....and keeping in mind it's STILL 44.1/16 bit

Yes, some RBCDs can sound better than hi rez downloads (especially upsampled ones) but methinks MoFi hit a home run with their SACD reissue of the Pretenders and on a more revealing set up, I'm sure it would trump even the AF Gold CD (I have a ton of AF/MoFi Gold RBCDs and the SQ is all over the map).

Sorry, Frank, just my opinion.......and w/o the AF Gold RBCD on hand for comparison...... just an educated 'guess.'
