Finally a BluRay disc to my liking. Beautiful pronounced sound. Total immersion in Multichannel.
Did not know those modern pieces, but they are beautiful.

Nice to hear from you, Luc. Thanks for bringing attention to this one. Total immersion...I am intrigued.

To me it's a bit like a Tacet recording.
Sound is altough PCM, really crisp and clear.
Pity that the box is so fragile, it immediately broke as soon as I went looking how the 2nd disc looked like, and it's only a stereo RBCD.

I have no problem with PCM recordings that are done well. :)

Along with the reviews on amazon, I found a detailed and positive review over on ArkivMusic, which said in brief, the performances here of the Weill and Berg concertos face stiff competition from others, but still hold up well. And everyone seems to rave about the immersive surround sound. Not to take away from Multichannel's special ability to recreate the the natural sound of a concert hall and put us in the audience... I am excited to see labels, such as Tacet, 2L and Sono Luminus give us new and stimulating perspectives by making good use of Multichannel's immersive capability.

And please allow me to do the same in return for your post a while back... Old, New and Blue: Holland Baroque Society meets Eric Vloeimans.

I finally tracked down a copy of it last weekend and love it!

You posted... "We attended the live concert in Rotterdam lately, and found it was breathtakingly beautiful, with an intelligent mix of classical and jazzy impressions. The disc was recorded very well, very close to the actual live performance."

I completely agree. Wonderful music making! And it IS very well recorded. A shining example of the Multichannel's ability to bring the natural sound of a concert into our home.

for all due respect to one's wish to have these works in MC, can the Baton Rouge Symphony (??) seriously be taken to be able to compete with recordings by the likes of Boulez or Abbado on RBCD? I would like to have the Chamber Concerto in hi-res (SA-CD) as much as the next person, but it needs to be on a similar level in terms of performance. We're not listening to hi-res for hi-res's sake.

I love your optimism. Seriously! ;)

The review that I refered to on ArkivMusic also discusses other performances that some or many might find preferable. I don't wish to debate with you on that. In fact, I haven't even heard these performances yet.

But on Vinyl and RBCDs there are PLENTY of subpar performances of every work...both old and new performances! Nobody complains about those being released. It is funny the way people talk about older recordings on vinyl and RBCDs around here. It seems like everything was just so happy & wonderful back in the good old days. However... every new SACD must have a "performance of the century" in order for its release to be justified.

Ah... La Vie en rose...

well, maybe I was a bit too optimistic there :-). Delivering a performance of similar quality as the Abbado or Boulez recording (or Heinz Holliger) is going to be a tall order, let alone beating them.
And you're right, there are plenty subpar performances of every work -- although I can't recall many for Berg's Chamber Concerto -- as it is not an easy work to perform, hence my question whether the Baton Rouge Symphony can be trusted here.

I suggest that BIS or Channel Classics has this work recorded, together with Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony. That'd be great.... Now I'm being optimistic!
