That's misleading.

I apologize, I should have been more specific in the definition of "recording team", which refers to the group actually doing the session recording. I purposely did not say post production, or mastering, which was performed by Exton for the Exton releases, and by SoundMirror for the Reference and Pentatone. These post processes of course strongly influence the resulting recordings.

I would also hasten to add that IMO, the Exton releases are not "better"; you, Euell, and perhaps others happen to prefer their stereo recording's sound balance , which is drier on Exton. I for one, do not.

Drier?? Hardly. To me, the Pittsburgh Mahler recordings sound full, clear and reasonably bright without the excesses of the two Reference recordings. The Strauss album has great clarity, but sounds a bit thin, while the Dvorak-Janacek album sounds great in the quieter passages, but sounds a bit tubby when "ff" is called for. The balance in these two albums sounds altogether different (in the stereo tracks). Neither is a bad recording and are better than many, but they are hardly the final word in the recording art.

You've been setting in between those huge electrostats too long. And, lets compare apples to apples. If you are used to listening in multichannel most of the time, you are bound to have an issue listening in stereo.

In any case, I calls 'em as I hears 'em and am not a dedicated fanboy to any label or recording outfit (unlike some here).

Moi? :)

You're right, I never listen to stereo, unless I'm mastering or editing. It gives me a headache as I've confessed before.

I rest my case.

I'm sure those four huge electrostats in circular formation undoubtedly provide a great mch experience, even without the multifarious tweaks recommended by Ralph.

Four? Can't do real ITU multi-channel with four speakers. The center channel is the most important to localizing the image. They're five SoundLabs M-1PX panels.

I returned to the hifi interest after years of being away, only because multi-channel reproduction gave me what I was searching for all those years of recording.

I stand corrected, and, as Barry Goldwater once said, extremism in the pursuit of virtue is no vice. Or, at least I seem to recall he said that.

Defense of "liberty" not "virtue".

Does anyone know why is Professor Johnson not the sound engineer anymore on Reference Recording's SACD's. The SoundMirror SACDs I have heard are not as good as Professor Johnson engineered recordings.
