Yes, the transfer level is high but not too limiting on dynamic range.I have stereo only equipment so don't have to cope with what seems the very odd sounding surround layer.

I haven't had time to do more than scratch the surface of this magnificent collection, but it seems to me that the culprit in the multi-channel version is the center channel. In some selections, listening on a 4.1 system that mixed the center channel in with the left and right channels, the center channel so overwhelms the left and right channels that you almost think you're listening to a monaural recording. Removing the center channel fixed that nicely. Adding a discrete speaker for the center channel, making it a 5.1 system, also seems to help the problem, although I haven't yet had very much listening time in that mode.

Then, too, in some selections the left and right surround channels seem to have very little separation between them, while in others they're well separated and very spacious sounding. The former selections are probably the ones that will most benefit from listening to the two-channel version. If your receiver has a selection of fake surround modes, you might want to try them and see if they help.
