I take it from the identical timing of 32'03 that this is same recording of the first symphony that was released a couple of years ago with the second and third symphonies.

That's what The Man said.

Is the rationale for this that they ran out of symphonies to record and wanted to avoid the accusation of short measure?

Yes, basically. No 1 and 15 is also a standard coupling for those without a great interest in the No 2 and 3. It also closes the circle.

Despite the two symphonies having no valid artistic connection. Historically the link of particular works on disc has been more than simple convenience.

I'd have accepted 15 on its own but obviously meanies need 'value for money'. I wonder how many will play the filler more than once? Listening to two unlinked symphonies in one listening session is mentally uncomfortable and makes no sense.

If you would have accepted S15 on its own, you have no cause for complaints just because you got S1 as well, even if you had it before.

That said, this wasn't an easy decision, and not a nice one either. No more symphonies to be had, no more recording time with that Orchestra - it was the symphonies, full stop - and no wish whatsoever to release a record with 46 minutes' playing time. After all, there are a lot of persons, who haven't bought the SACD with S1-3.

This goes to show, how incredibly much smarter downloading is than buying physical. There you get to choose exactly what you want, and only that.

So there - Robert

Although it's a bit strange to release the same recording on two different occasions in the same cycle, I think it makes sense to add Symphony 1 also here, since it is much more popular than Symphonies 2 and 3.

People who didn't want to buy the Symphony 1-3 disc will have a chance to get it with the essential Symphony 15.

Robert,

If I read your new release announcement correctly the Ades violin concerto, etc. Is being released as a download only, presumably because of total timing issues. Is there any chance of a later sacd release if a suitable disc mate appears? Best wishes,

Bill

Dear Bill,

correct and yes, resp. There will be a physical release, but it'll be a while.
