We all know about the Dvorak Symphonies minus 8 and 9 (especially the seventh), but what else would it be nice to have in a modern recording?

By modern I do mean recorded (I hope) in DSD* and good multi-channel sound issued as a hybrid where the option exists if you want it, to play in stereo only. Most multi-channel hybrids do that now of course.

Still with Dvorak, do we have a good modern SACD of the Symphonic Variations? How is Robert Schumann doing. What about Schubert's Ninth?

A thread that might have preceded this one is "Why in the heck don't we have a Schubert Ninth other than the Szell?"

I bet Ivan Fischer and the Budapest would do a great job with that one! So might Yakov Kreizburg and the Vienna Symphony.

There appears to be a Mozart lacuna as well. I for one would love to have OTHER THAN a "period instrument" realization of symphonies 25, 29 and 31 through 41.
His piano concertos as well, starting with #11 would go on my short list. We already have a #9 with Brendel right?

* I realize that the need to record in DSD to achieve great sound is questioned by some companies notably BIS.

dear surfer, there already is an excellent Schubert Great on SACD, with Kubelik. The source of confusion is that its listed as S#8 instead of #9. But dont let that put you off, its a truly fine performnacwe with an equally good #3 thrown in for good measure. Stereo only, analogue source.

As for the Dvorak, not only do we not have the 7th and the Variations, but only St Ludmilla of the Sacred works and only really mediocre and quite dull performances of the Piano Cto (on Channel) and the Violin Cto (on Linn). And only a couple of string quartets and one piano trio so far, - with a dozen more quartets needed, three trios, and the string quinttets and sestet plus the piano quintet and piano quartets.

What I'd love to hear on SACD are the Nielsen Symphs in DSD. The Jarvi 5th sounds fine as sound but performance is inexciting, - and what music for DSD surround, especially the 3 & 4 as well as 5. No Nielsen VC yet. Sigh.

I also want more Vivaldi sacred works, the Haydn masses, Brahms piano ctos & chamber music, and in more C20th mode, Vasks, Kancheli, Baratim, Tubin, Maskats, and a host more.

So, in answer to your question, a hell of a lot, with what's been released so far just the tip of the tail on an arctic tern atop the tip of an iceberg.

Brenda, Dacapo will issue a DVD-Video of the Nielsen symphonies with Schönwandt soon. I don´t know anything about the sound though.

We badly need the Sibelius Tone poems.

Brahms piano ctos & chamber music

Number 1 on the list of works not on SACD (in any form!): Bartok string quartets. Nothing else even comes close.

As far as Brahms goes, I'm with you on the concerti, but chamber music is actually doing pretty well! Check out the recent releases by Praga (3rd quartet and piano quintet), and Pentatone (piano quartets). Both exceptional releases that cover some of Brahms best music for the first time on SACD.

Edit: I see that Praga is putting out another volume of Brahms chamber music, this time featuring the 1st quartet and the clarinet quintet! Go Praga!

I'm assuming these are the same recordings available on DaCapo CD; they are excellent performances, and the recording quality is typical of the best on this label.

We badly need good multi-channel SACDs of all Schumann symphonies, of Schubert's incidental music to "Rosamunde", of Liszt's piano concertos and major symphonic poems, of Sibelius's and Strauss's tone-poems (especially "Symphonia domestica"), of extracts from Wagner's "Ring", of Janacek's Sinfonietta, Taras Bulba and Lachian Dances, of Brahms's piano concertos and Serenade No. 1, of Mendelssohn's overtures (especially "Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage"), of Delibes's complete ballets "Coppélia" and "Sylvia", of Rossini's "Stabat mater" and Schoenberg's "Gurre-Lieder".

I remember reading here that the Gardiner set of Schumann's symphonies was one of Universal's first MC recordings - unfortunately they were never released as such!
Cheers
Nick

Agree with above re Strauss but Four Last Songs would be my priority with his violin concerto..Throw in the whole Lyrita catelogue and Most French composers Dindy Massenet Ibert (divertissment)Pierne etc More Spanish and South American, Kodaly and Central European composers, Vainberg (as an alternative to Shosty) Prokofiev orchestral works and concertos , Korngold and the Film music era, Scandinavian, Chinese Orchestral,Aussie/NZ and Russian (soviet era)Scriabin and then I will gladly cut the wifes pocket money for these....LESS solo ORGAN MUSIC please WE HAVE GOT ENOUGH/// Oh and Dvorak seventh...er and the Beatles....Nobady has mention Gilbert and Sullivan yet......So I wont......As Brenda said...An awfull lot...I would be happy with just stereo...Ive a longer list og more popular stuff.....Dave
