Discussion: Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 "Romantic" - Janowski

It is not often that Bruckner's symphonies inspire spontaneous foot tapping but Janowski and the Swiss players pull off this trick with a buoyant, almost rip roaring account of the Romantic (Nowak) that rather took us by surprise and which many will find irresistible.

As many will recall, I have a jaundiced view of the old curmudgeon and usually rate performances of his symphonies by a snooze factor, the threshold of which diminishes with the passing years. Not this time 'though and true to form Janowski offers a master class in squeezing juice from a lemon and making it taste palatable.

This is a more than worthy conclusion to the Pentataone survey and in truth the quality of performances has been consistently high throughout, perhaps to the extent that many collectors may judge this set indispensable. A fine effort and thoroughly recommended.

The are approximately 25 different recordings of this symphony on SACD, 3 by Wand alone! I find this astonishing.

I am just so thankful that Janowski & Pentatone took the time, effort (and money) to give us a complete Wagner cycle on SACD... In Mch!!!

I haven't had a chance to listen to his Bruckner symphonies. I look forward to trying some (...maybe all) of these.

Is there going to be an SACD Bruckner box set?

Hi,

Coviello has one with the Sinfonieorchester Aachen conducted by Marcus Bosch.
All are live recordings.

Greetings

Joerg-Thomas

I believe I will have to give this recording a try. I have very similar thoughts on Janowski's performance of the 5th. He seems to have a good feeling of when to add some pace and excitement to Bruckner's more repetitive passages.

I haven't heard anything yet. But I wouldn't be surprised if Pentatone released them all in a set...just as they did with Beethoven: The 9 Symphonies - Herreweghe. I sure do wish they would find a better way to package them. The Beethoven set is a bit awkward to use.

Even better on second listening.
