I should clarify: full sized Romantic orchestras, well recorded, and well played by world-class musicians. :-)

Brahms: The Symphonies - Rattle

Not good enough?

You are a hard man to please John:-)

Seems to be a 'John's' sort of thing, Rattle is absolutely hopeless on all but the 3rd.

For whatever reasons the Brahms Symphonies have proved to be immensely challenging for many orchestras and maestros since even Von Karajan.

The only set that really excited me in recent years was Abbado with the BPO on DG but the digital recording SQ was truly abysmal.

The boobies here vote negatively for negative reviews because mommy mewled: "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all." The smarties here vote negatively for pithy reviews because they're rarely helpful.

Well said. I change my status to "smarty".

Ooops...forgot to add multi-channel...and I've never heard an EMI that sounded good to my ears!

Before its deletion, the previous post included a link to the Barnes & Noble product page for the subject SACD, but only for the purpose of sharing a review that was presented there. That review was sourced from the All Music Guide, where one can also see the reviewer's not-so-great rating:

The adage you quote should be a truism for life but doubtful it has anything to do with why people vote negatively on reviews. Often negative reviews do not give enough information about the reasons why the disc was not liked, remember other people are trying to make a purchasing decision.

Would you be put off buying a new stereo amp by a one-liner such as "I thought this amp was a load of c**p"? Of course not you would label the comment as unhelpful and move on to other more thoughtful reviews.
