And seriously, how much can it really cost to develop a computer program that simply pushes a DSD datafile from a computer to a DAC?

If you want to comment intelligently on this subject, may I suggest you learn what's already available for this market, and application. First, what you're suggesting has already been accomplished by at least six companies that make software players that "push" DSD files from a computer to a DSD compatible DAC. Secondly, the development costs of those players range between several hundred thousand dollars, to more than a million. They are very complete players that may be configured to simply display a playlist, and deliver the DSD data to the DAC, to very elaborate software sample rate converters. and filters, for PCM audio customizing. And dirt cheap for what they offer. $50 tops.

Jared is a label of minimal resources. Software players are not his expertise. He is however working with all the DSD DAC and hardware players (Oppo for instance) to facilitate exactly what you suggest. A seamless transition into the DSD download market.

Haven't you and Jared been preaching for all these years that the 5-channel audio is the biggest advantage of SACD, 2-channel DSD is not that great blah blah blah...

Stay tuned, it's too early in this process to form conclusions. The entire effort is to get something started supporting all the new DSD DACs, not go broke doing it, and adjust the pricing when the markets develop a bit.

But you're correct, multi-channel audio has been the largest differentiator of SACD from CD. Delivery of those files is a problem that may not be solvable for five or more years until the world wide networks catch up to facilitate 8GB files. There may be some other media needed, like DVD-R or USB stick to bridge that gap. It depends on how many customers purchase a SACD for the MCh content. 100?

But to Jared, his multi'channel files are the technical crown jewels of his catalog. Hardly going away

He suggests two options for Mac users:

Pure Music: $129
Audirvana: $74

Where is the $50 option?

And again, calling me an idiot and insulting Jared's other customers is a really brilliant way to earn customer loyalty.

But you know what, I guess I'm not just intelligent enough to be Channel Classics customer because I make stupid suggestions about the products you want me to buy.

Yet Channel Classics prices multi-channel downloads at the same level as stereo dsd downloads. Isn't it a little bit inconsistent with your preachings about superiority of multi channel audio?

"The technical crown jewels of his catalog" cost not even one cent more than his stereo downloads.

Ahhh, I keep forgetting you Mac users. JRiver, for the PC is $50. But you Mac guys are used to getting hosed on prices. Even at $129 and $79, a great bargain for all they do.

And if you take my responses as calling you an idiot, that that's your problem.

Actually, it is your's and Jared's problem, because this interaction will color my view of what you're trying to sell me and alter my buying habits. I'm actually happy to buy discs that I'm not all that thrilled about because it helps labels and artists that I believe are doing valuable work, as well as often speak up to other people about the good work they're doing. But if this how I'm going to be treated for expressing my views as one of your customers, other people can benefit from my money.

Ahhh, the ostrich strategy :)

A mischaraterization, but better than a lemming strategy.
