Performance:   Sonics:
This is the first SACD release of one of the most famous Reiner shaded dogs, although arguably not one of the very greatest sonically. But it still was and remains a very fine recording. I compared it to the best previous digital version I have heard, the JCC XRCD, SHM-CD version, and while in terms of the overall dynamics and imaging there wasn't a great deal of difference, the impression of depth, of an orchestra in a hall in three dimensions was noticeably greater with the SACD than the CD, which sounded two-dimensional in comparison. Individual instruments stood out noticeably more sharply--never heard that triangle in Kije like this before! The SACD actually compares very favorably with the original shaded dog--in fact, I'd say it was marginally better--and even with the excellent Classics LP reissue. The Analogue Productions LP reissue? Well, no, that outscores them all, but you can't have everything. (For reference, I listen basically in stereo but through a four channel system with a Meridian surround controller for the rear channels only.) As to the performance--well, if you've never heard this recording, you should run to order this version of it now instead of whatever else you thought you needed instead.
