This is third release of Thomas Dausgaard's Schubert cycle with Swedish Chamber Orchestra. Dausgaard's previous recordings are very good, and this continues this line; performances are moving and exciting.
Schubert composed these work when he was only teen, and Dausgaard conducts very powerfully and strongly. The Third Symphony's slow introduction sounds very good. The fast main theme is performed quickly and first clarinet's solo is loudly. The gentle second movement is beautiful, and tempi are moving. The angry scherzo sounds powerful. The fast finale, Presto is performed clearly and vividly and BIS label's sound quality is terrific. Symphony's end is breathtaking.
The fourth symphony's "Tragic" first long C is stunning: timpani's tremolo is like lightning strike and small orchestra's tone (there are only over 30 players) is natural and fresh. This symphony is familiar for me, and the unhappy slow introduction is performed good. The fast main theme is excellent. The warmly second movement is very gentle, and strings sound is heartbreaking: the music is so beautiful. The passionately second theme is much better than Michael Halasz's (Naxos) or Herbert Blomdtedt's recordings (Brilliant Classics). I like it. Scherzo is fast, but it isn't hurry and horns and trumpets accents are performed strongly. The finale begins bassoon's and cello's C minor league (very simply idea for Schubert) and the whole finale sounds very good. Symphony ends in lightly C major. The whole symphony is journey from darkness to light.
The classical fifth symphony is also very attractive. By the way, Dausgaard's Schubert cycle is the best modern version and I'm looking for the next release: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2. Bravo!
