The Grieg String quartet is IMO an overlook gem; it can easily compete with the much better known works by Dvorak or Brahms. It is a "orchestral" sounding piece with a lot of doublestops which makes it a natural candidate for a string orchestra version. The Australien Chamber ORchestra plays it wonderfully and with gusto; tempi are sometimes astonishing fast, but playing never suffers. The additional pieces are welcome additions with less weight, also played excellent. Sound quality is very good; but I wish, BIS would mike less directly and use less spotmiking (at least the solo violin, especially in Erotikk, sounds quite prominent), as they did in the 1980s and 1990s.
