Reviews: Bruckner: Symphony No. 5 - Wand

Performance:   Sonics:
This recording is very simply summarised. A great performance, in fine sound. IMHO this is the premier Bruckner 5 in hi-resolution sound, and definitely recommended over his later BPO reading.

Wand's Bruckner cycle is one of the wonders of the recorded repertoire, and this reading of the epic 5th does not disappoint. Moreover, this earlier recording with his beloved NDR Orchestra gives absolutely nothing away musically and interpretationally to the much-lauded BPO version - some might argue, in fact, that it's even more incandescent and idiomatically Brucknerian than the later recording. You could include me in that camp, too. This is his own band, after all, and that intimacy shows in the effortless but inevitable ebb and flow of the music.

Moreover, this Hamburg-housed recording wins outright in the sonic stakes. It is blessed by mercifully better sound than the coarse, bloated and dynamically constrained BPO Philharmonie effort: this one is substantially clearer, more transparent, better focussed and improved dynamically. So Wand here gets the sound quality that this magnificent performance deserves.

It may be noted -in passing - that that ALL Wand's BPO recordings I have heard (and that's pretty much all of them now) sound significantly poorer than the earlier NDR/Cologne outings. So now you know.
