Reviews: Rolling Stones: Tattoo You

Performance:   Sonics:
An outtakes album? Sure, but a top-notch one mixed by Bob Clearmountain. Veteran audiophiles will know what to expect--crystal clear sound, crisp high end, bass but not too deep, 1980s reverb, but not too extreme.

What I did not expect, some 30 years later, was that you can hear a very strong influence of The Band on what was side 2, the ballad side. Great stuff, and as a bonus, you get intriguing curios like the "Mick on all guitars, Bill on synth, Chris Kimsey on Piano" track "Heaven". Even better, you get two lovely Mick Taylor guitar tunes, "Tops" and "Waiting For A Friend", plus a tasty Wayne Perkins lead break on "Worried About You".

Not bad for something "cobbled together just before a tour"...

Energy and passion knocked down with the first notes. Heard that this record is 60-70, and newer. Sound refined and accentuated to the limit, the effect of presence is awesome.

Rolling Stones: Tattoo You SHM SACD Re release 11-26-2014 Stereo

Funny, I remember buying this 1981 CD for the first in the 90's. Had been to enough football games that I wanted to own the disc with Start Me Up. I was amazed at my reaction, omg, I know all these songs from the radio. I am guessing I purchased the 1994 RBCD.

My review is of the recent Japanese reissue of the original 2011 SHM SACD. I have nothing to compare to but I believe this 2014 to be same as 2011?

Performance: Pretty much a hit machine of tracks. Ronnie Wood is now with the band, his 4th disc.
I will just assume the reader is a Stones fan and they like as much as I do.

Stereo Sonics: My current system McIntosh with HDMI cableing, stereo (right-left-sub) for this purpose. No tweaking of my system needed. What I hear is great stereo separation, vocals center, solos come center, great stereo mix between bass, rhythm guitar and drums. No tape hiss and tracks pretty much start and end with no shenanigans. Can play medium to loud with out bother. Fills my listening room very well. I don't get too rattled on these older recordings of rock music, they are what they are. The original 2011 SHM SACD DR value is 13, real good, I assume this disc is equal. The worst version is 2009 with a DR of 8, not good. This has a FINER recorded sound than the older recordings.

Packaging: Green disc. Plastic jewel case with square corners. Mini paper gate fold original, nothing spectacular. Mini paper booklet in Japanese with English lyrics.

Glad I have it in the library.
