This CLASSIC represents a break in Coltrane's artistic commitment. It is a collection of famous ballads performed in a mellow tone. The total harmony in the quartet allows to enligthen each tune. An easy listening for a first step in Coltrane's world. 'Ballads' is a masterpiece.
What's about this SHM-SACD sound?
CLARITY and ACCURACY in a deluxe packaging.
Yes Coltrane is still living: I can hear him breath in! Elvin Jones drumming is really enhanced.
Please note that SHM-SACD format is only compatible with standard SACD player (it does not play on standard CD players)
Audio configuration: Marantz SA7001 + Black Cube amp + HD650

I think Universal Japan did a great job with this new sacd. Some fans of Coltrane complain that there are to many ballads on this album but this is what makes it so enjoyable. Whats wrong with romantic sax playing??? Coltrane was a master of such things. Many of the songs on this album are released in the best of coltrane discs.
There is tape hiss heard on this transfer but because of this the sound is so much more alive and real. There is no clipping or reduction in the sound at all. Coltranes sax is rendered beautifully here. At times the drumming, while reserved crackles into sudden life. The bass is solid and anchors the ballads beautifully.
This is a very relaxing but beautifully created album and it is transferred most gorgeously on this new shm-sacd.
