Hmmmm. Well it seems that not all shm-sacd's are better than their previous counterparts.

All of the newly mastered 2010 shm-sacd's are pretty awesome. They sound like magnetic tape and completely non-digital.

I have purchesed other shm-sacd's that were released years ago. Sonically and for the most part, they do better the original releases. But in my humble opinion new dsd masters from the tapes should have been done. Although the Getz/ Gilberto jazz shm-sacd is magnificent the others are only marginally better..

I own the original Layla sacd. I absolutely love the sound even though it's a 24/192 digital transfer originally and then transferred to dsd. The original sacd is also compressed and the volume has to be set a little low. Sonically it's most excellent. A truly great classic rock jam album.

Universal Japan has used the same dsd master but that's where the similarity ends. It seems that all the life was snuffed out of this title. I noticed that the bass and drums lost so much of their impact. This sacd seems flat and lifeless compared to the previous sacd. What happened????

Gone is the compression but also the low end. Now it is flat and boring.
Pure dsd recording from the master tapes would have been much, much better.(aCTUALLY for the price we lovers of music shell out its the only way to go)
One need only compare the two versions of Allman Brothers Live at Fillmore to prove HOW NEW TRANSFERS make a difference. The older sacd had pcm transfers while the newer one is all tape. The new shm-sacd leaves the old one in the dust by comparison. In fact there is NO comparison.

Now that this new sacd has been created one can really hear how lacking 24/192 transfers really are compared to real dsd transfers done from the tapes.. I never noticed this before with the older sacd. Probably because the compression hid this.

For those who think that the tech's cant change the sound of older dsd files..........think again. They can do more than tweak them.

I would stay away from this particular title and do not recommend it. I have already reviewed the previous sacd and recommend that instead. The original sacd of Layla is awesome. And the direct opposite holds true here...there is NO comparison.
Mores the pity.

There are small flaws in the recording itself. But this in no way relates to the wagon, the disc was executed by five balls. Benefits of SHM-SACD appear in full.

The SHM-CD also sounds great (based on same master), if you can't get the SACD. Dynamic range is like original versions of music.
