Interprétation, qualité de la musique enregistrée : Voilà de la musique contemporaine qui ne ressemble pas à une partition créée par un Pentium IV à qui on aurait fait ingurgiter quelques notions de composition orchestrale ! Guillaume Connesson est un vrai compositeur et les trois poèmes symphoniques "cosmiques" qu'il présente sur ce disque feraient une symphonie attirante. Le concerto pour piano est court mais encore une fois, ça change vraiment de certaines élucubrations sonores "modernes". Très intéressant !

Acoustique 7,5/8 : Excellente acoustique légèrement réverbérée.
Distance 8/8 : Bien.
Spatialisation 7,5/8 : Excellente avec toutefois un léger déséquilibre vers la droite en raison des instruments plus utilisés de ce côté. Les cordes sont assez discrètes.
Tonalité 5,5/6 : Equilibre respecté. Les percussions sont puissantes mais manquent un peu de précision et d'impact.
Balance 6/6 : Balance parfaite (avec réserves ci-dessus), canaux arrière impeccables.
Dynamique 6/6 : Dynamique parfaite sans compression. Niveau d'enregistrement assez bas, il faut monter les décibels pour bien profiter de ces oeuvres.
Présence, impression générale 7,5/8 : Enregistrement DSD. Le piano (passage de quelques minutes sur la dernière piste) est bien intégré à l'orchestre. Très bon enregistrement.

Castor's detailed review seems to me to be right on the money. His comparison of Connesson's compositional style with that of Michael Gandolfi is especially apt. If you like moderately complex but "accessible" new symphonic music, you will enjoy this disc. The sonorities are often remarkable, and are captured quite well by Chandos, with the caveat (as Castor mentioned) that you're going to have to turn up the volume a bit -- and then you'll find yourself reducing it when the first movement hits its stride.

The finest parts of this disc are the two most recently composed movements of the trilogy. In them the composer ventures furthest into surprising territory, incorporating recent influences from Indian music and American composer John Adams (the latter not always fully digested yet). By contrast, the final movement, Supernova (initially composed in 1997) seems most conventional and not always compelling. The brief piano concerto is kind of a puzzle. Why write just nine minutes for Jean-Yves Thibaudet? (Contractual obligations aside, this may help explain why he did not record it.)

It will be interesting to see how well this music "wears" in my household. It is certainly engaging, but does it have enough formal or emotional substance that I will return to it often?
