Dave Alvin solidified his reputation through the ‘80s rockabilly group The Blasters. When he broke away from that band and went solo, his creativity reached its fulfillment.

Mobile Fidelity’s crystal clear reproduction of the original master tapes transferred to Super Audio Compact Disc gives “Blackjack David” a clarity and tone that is an absolute joy to experience. I have enjoyed all of Alvin’s solo work and this album is a superlative rendering of his brand of roots rock. The ability to use the lower register of his vocals to sing and talk his way through a song makes him one of the most authoritative and evocative recording artist actively recording.

“Abilene” is the most memorable tune in the collection; actually, the entire album is hard to forget. I cannot stop listening to it. Alvin’s voice is hypnotic and the music has a distant longing, which is more apparent when the country influences surface in each track. “California Snow” is a heart rendering emotive composition. Alvin’s voice has time to paint a landscape around the music, manufacturing a story that magically assimilates within your mind. Because of the improved sound, your perceptions are more realistic and lasting. Those two tracks were the highlights for me. In its entirety, this is a very strong and consistent album and definitely worthy of this special treatment.

Alvin contributes additional liner notes for this special issue, which will enlighten music fans as to what was behind the making of the music. That is always an interesting subject, giving the recording an entirely different perspective. Is there are more complete audio experience available today? I would say no at this point but it is subject to change on a regular basis. Welcome back Mobile Fidelity, I look forward to hearing every release from this day forward.
