Performance: Sonics: |
This one has been an audiophile classic for decades, and with good reason. Although the playing is a little schmaltzy, it is a lot of fun to listen to with friends, or as a divergence from the more complex music of Thelonious or Miles SACDs.
The new SACD remaster brings to light some major damage to the master tapes here and there, but it is a vast improvement over Winston Ma's earlier XRCD version since the master tape has been biased correctly here (where it wasn't on the XRCD).

Performance: Sonics (S): |
Enough has previously been written about the performance over the years so I will just comment on the sound quality of the SACD in 2 Channel.
As described in the accompanying notes Gert Palmerantz the recording engineer approached this project with a passion seldom encountered in a commercial recording. What I think he wanted to convey to the listener is a sense of realism and the feeling of actually being at the venue rather than experiencing it through a “sonic window” and IMHO that is exactly what was accomplished. If more recording engineers could put as much dedication and passion into their work we would all benefit greatly.
So, go ahead and: Dim the lights.....crank it up.....you're there! Enjoy the experience!

This is a fantastic title.
The music is great - not too complicated and not too boring.
Sonics is top class.
