Reviews: Supreme Jazz: Carmen McRae

Performance:   Sonics:
For a 1982 Montreux Jazz Festival live reocrding this sounds pretty good. If you don't mind the typical bass pickup sound, that is. Instrument separation is strict and the overall sound rather dry, the bass drum sounds a little hard and a bit obtrusive (Bailey was not using his own drum kit, I suppose), but the voice is very natural, the group balance is okay. The sidemen are not mentioned on the CD or in the booklet, but Carmen McRae credits them: Marshall Otwell on piano, John Leftwich on bass, and Donald Bailey on drums. All players are in fine form. You get a fine piece of 1980's McRae in good sound with this one. The leader is in good spirits, sings fine and in her very personal style, swings, and even plays two encore tunes accompanying herself on piano - Mc Rae fans will not be disappointed.
