Reviews: Encores - Kroumata Percussion Ensemble

The operative word here is "encores". If most percussion records are deadly serious -- rather like Boulez conducting Boulez -- then this one is more like Beecham conducting Lollipops. This is music on the other end of the spectrum from "East Meets West, Les Percussions de Strasbourg" from Philips via Pentatone. It is impossible to describe in a sentence or two the huge variety of material. There are fifteen pieces ranging from 2'30" to 5'52" in length, most of which include "tuned " percussion, or flute or vocal soloists. Baritone Håkan Hagegård sings two songs, one by composer Hugo Alfvén!

The 5.0 channel sound from BIS could not be bettered, catching every detail from the quietest tap on a cymbal to thoroughly convincing thwacks on big drums. Purists should be advised: the instruments are placed around the room! Good clean fun.

It's not the kind of program meant to be listened to from start to finish. But one or two of these delightful tracks after a heavy dose of ________ really hits the spot.

Highly recommended on all counts.
