Reviews: Robert Craft Collection, Vol. II - Stravinsky

Performance:   Sonics:
This is certainly the best sounding Naxos SACD I've heard, and probably because it wasn't engineered by Naxos. It's a reissue of a recording originally released on the MusicMasters label in the late 1990's, and was recorded in EMI's Abbey Road studio. The recorded sound, though slightly soft and diffuse, has great breadth and depth, as well as a wonderful sense of space. Good, deep bass, too. I'm sure it's of PCM origin, but there are no traces of PCM hardness or edginess here. Very nice.

I found the performances, conducted by legendary Stravinsky assistant and authority Robert Craft, to be less colorful and characterful than, say, Dorati, Davis, or Boulez, but satisfying nonetheless. The performance of the Firebird is the world premiere recording of the original 1910 version with, among other things, the notable addition of 2 valveless trumpets in the finale; their contribution is minimal, but it does add a bit of a brazen quality at the end.
