Reviews: Sonny Rollins: The Sound of Sonny

Reviews: 1

Performance:   Sonics:
This is not considered one of the groundbreaking recordings in Sonny Rollins' long career, but it ranks in the top third - the leader was in fine, relaxed form, his sidemen were alert and supportive. The choice of tunes and his performance shows his very personal musical sense of humor. Pianist Sonny Clark, bassists Percy Heath (in a rare appearance outside of the Modern Jazz Quartet) or Paul Chambers, and drummer Roy Haynes are all worth a close listen here.
The sound is open with a natural room ambiance and considerably better than the previously available CD reissue. The new remaster displays more detail in the higher frequencies and improves dynamics.
