Performance:  Sonics:
Very good stereo sound from one of the greatest albums of all time. Every instrument and voice has its own space. Linda's vocals are more lush and lifelike than ever. Richard's guitar has a softer feel, less harsh than the previous CD issue. Classic songs.

We need the entire Richard Thompson catelogue on SACD.

This is a great album, and really shows the genius of Richard Thompson.

Performance:
I bought this disc on a whim recently and figured I should share my thoughts on it.

This album is widely considered to be one of the great rock albums of its time and is highly recommended by many critics and fans. I can't say that I agree. I would normally at least review the sonics in this space, but I found the music so detestable that I couldn't listen to a single song in its entirety. What I did hear sounded fine, but I won't be putting the disc back in my player ever again. While this probably doesn't seem like much of a constructive review, I felt compelled to post this as a warning to others: Listen before you buy!

Performance:  Sonics:
As a long-time fan of Richard Thompson and the owner of four different issues of this recording (Hannibal LP, 4 Men with Beards LP, Rykodisc Au20 gold CD and Hannibal SACD), and as one who had the good fortune to hear the music from this recording performed live, I can enthusiastically recommend this SACD reissue and award it the highest rating for performance and sonics. Those listeners who are not familiar with the musical accomplishments of Richard Thompson's 40-year career would do well to begin with this disc. Rarely has a songwriter laid bare his own domestic failure -- the breakup of a marriage and the loss of an artistic partnership -- so poignantly. Not long after recording this album, Linda Thompson lost the ability to sing for nearly 20 years, making this document an especially significant milestone in her brief career.

Strictly from the standpoint of sonics, the SACD most closely resembles the Ryko Au20 release, not surprisingly, as both were remastered by Toby Clearmountain from the original analogue tapes. The SACD's extra resolution particularly benefits Linda's expressive vocals, and adds a touch more snap to Dave Mattacks' snare hits.

I hope that Hannibal will remaster Richard's next chronological release, "Hand of Kindness", in SACD format, and that Capitol Records will license their RT titles for SACD reissue.
