Having owned Yola (the other Eleanor McEvoy title) for a couple of years now I was very excited when this album was released. Having waited for weeks because of a mess-up at my local record store I could wait to put this in my player.
Well this wasn’t the follow up album I was hoping for. Even though the sound quality is great this album is unbelievable boring. Maybe it was the high hopes I was having for this disc, maybe it would be different if this was my first encounter with Eleanor. But in this case Yola seems to be miles ahead of this release.
If you have to make a choice between her two SACD titles please do yourself a favor and buy Yola.

This is one of the most beautifully written, recorded and performed titles I have had the pleasure to listen to in some time. I don't usually buy music based on reviews. However, when I read about an artist and title from several different and diverse sources and see the same superlatives over and over again it certainly piques my curiosity. I was not disappointed. It is my understanding that her previous disc, "Yola", like so many selections was brought to SACD as an after-thought. "Early Hours" on the other hand was recorded with SACD stereo and multichannel specifically in mind. I think this is one of the best examples of how multichannel can be used to enhance the listening experience with out introducing "circus acrobats" to the mix.

This is an intriguing disc because it falls into the category of what I call "mood music", not because it's characterized by a particular musical style, but because it has a very peculiar vibe to it. Eleanor McEvoy is trying to share some very personal stuff here, and it's cloaked with a layer of melancholy either intoxicating or unapproachable depending on your mood. The lyrics themselves don't always convey intimacy, but the singer's perfomance and the stark musical settings can definitely reach under your skin. And the surround mix only heightens that effect. It's mostly ambient in the rears, and her voice often seems bigger-than-life with the way her dusky alto is highlighted in the mix. An interesting effort to say the least - just don't expect to always connect with it.
