This is a very impressive disk. I have had this album on CD pretty much since it originally came out. The sound was always decent. But this SACD sounds so good, that if you are a fan of this album, you will have to get rid of your old version and pay $30 for this version. The sound is very immediate and present. It sounds as though the band is near you. Aimee Mann's voice is clearer than before and there's a lot of space around her voice. The other instruments are very distinct in the soundstage. They are also very clear and you can follow everything being played very easily. The percussion is amazing. The dynamic range is really very nice and realistic.

Aimee Mann's subdued singing style and incisive lyrics may not be to everyone's tastes, but I highly recommend this disk if you like slightly jazzy adult contemporary music. It reminds me of Elvis Costello's 90's albums without quite the vocal range. I really enjoy everything about this SACD, and it will remain in my SACD changer for a while.

I ordered this SACD Bachelor No. 2 From Barnes and Noble and Surprise it was SACD Stereo Only. Sadness is what I feel about the whole thing. The Lyrics are sort of sad and droopy. The music is ok. I will suggest another SACD that has some sad lyrics but does it in a way that's spiritulle and sort of lifting and also the good part is that it's Multichannel and really Drives my Harman Kardon soaring into hi-fidelity-heaven and That SACD is Bryan Ferry's Album Frantic. If your looking for a female vocal I would suggest the SACD Album Happy By Sita; and if you are sad...
This pop music will probably make you happy! However...Good luck trying to find a copy. Rounding it all up... the Aimm mann SACD is ok...

I had been curious about Bachelor #2 ever since I saw the movie Magnolia to which Aimee Mann provided many songs. The characters in that movie go through difficult times. Her music was so relevant to the scenes and appeared throughout the movie so many times that her music was also a main character.

Bachelor #2 shares a couple of songs with the movie and all of the feeling. You can tell by the lyrics that Aimee must have gone through some difficult times in her life. The music is very melodic so the lyrics often surprise you with their frankness and "hit the nail on the head" accuracy describing a feeling not with a word but with a sentence.

The thing that struck me when I first listened to Bachelor #2 on SACD was how her voice seemed to come from in front of the center speaker, when this is a stereo SACD. I actually got up to confirm that no sound was coming from that speaker. Her voice is very real and in that spot for the whole album. The instruments sound very clear and the drums are solid.

This album was always more expensive on CD than other albums and I didn't pick it up at the time. With SACDs I'm willing to pay the premium because they are absolutely worthwhile. This album justifies the premium.

I know others have given this release glowing reviews, but I find it to be a disappointment. Yes, the SACD treatment does give Ms. Mann's vocals a fair bit more depth and detail, but the instrumental tracks all sound about the same as on the redbook CD, which leads me to believe they were recorded in standard 44.1, 16-bit PCM. Definitely not the quantum leap in sound quality that I've heard on other Mobile Fidelity SACD releases.

As far as the music itself, about half the songs are 4-star level. The others seem a bit dirge-y and tend to plod a bit. Overall, a mixed bag, quality-wise.
