Playing Coltrane's 'Lush Life' SA-CD the question comes up; how good is the SA-CD compared to my vinyl copy of the same album, a Prestige re-issue (OJC-131)? It's interesting. I did some A/B comparisons. When I played the LP I thought the piano would sound better on the SA-CD. But it transpired that the piano sounded more or less the same on both formats. I don't think its sound was captured very well. Not airy, boxed in and covered with the proverbial blanket. I definitely liked the Sax/Trumpet better on LP. Much better in fact. More natural sound, fuller bodied and better soundstaging.

Overall the SACD sounds very nice, but the piano brings its rating down. 'Lush Life' is more mainstream than 'A Love Supreme' hence easier to get in to. The combination of standards and ballads is really nice, and to hear Coltrane minimally accompanied on ballads is a treat of the first order. This is definitely one to play over and over again.

The first track shows Coltrane's horn as clear as we're likely to ever hear it. Worth buying for this track alone. The musical content isn't as strong as many of his other albums however.
