Performance:  Sonics:
Concur with review from Amazon.com. Can also confirm the noise issue is not the reviewer's gear but present on the recording. It had me wondering if my gear was defective. Surprising, given Telarc's reputation. I'd never really listened to quartets arranged for orchestra, and while moderately interesting, such arrangements will not be a large part of my collection. I prefer quartets to be played by quartets.

Performance:  Sonics (S):
This is actually a glorius musical recording with excellent hall ambience and a great deal of dynamic range. The listening experience is only slightly hampered by some background noise on this SACD. A close friend from England familiar with the very old building in which this was recorded feels it's most likely mechanical equipment such as A/C. But how many times have you been to a live performance only to hear the same type of mechanical noise in the low passages; or perhaps coughing! The resolution and imaging is excellent, and soundstage is wide and deep - I find the performance surprisingly involving.
