This early (1999) single layer SACD release has now become a rare item. I bought it recently at a normal price ($20) on Ebay. The disc comes in a thick digipak box and an japanese/english booklet. It's great to finally have the lyrics to "Body and Soul" and "I got it bad and that ain't good" .... ;-)

It's a DSD stereo recording made at the Sony Studios Tokyo in March 1997.

Lee Konitz recorded a lot in the past two decades, and has rarely released a bad album. On this session, he plays it safe, using a reliable trio (Laurent de Wilde, piano; Ira Coleman, bass; Dion Parson, drums) and adding the japanese singer Keiko Lee on 3 tunes. The repertoire is a mix of standards and Konitz originals. The playing is fine, but not overly exciting. I'm not too fond of Keiko Lee's rather scholastic contribution. Maybe this was a one-time get-together which could explain the conservative setting. The last track is a short and forgettable scat improvision by Konitz.

As to the sound, it is very dry, direct and dynamic, like on any Eighty Eights productions (Yasohachi "88" Itoh is executive producer of this disc).

Having already many Konitz discs, I don't consider this album essential from a musical point of view, but it is an audiophile treat and now also a rarity worth hunting down.
