Performance:   Sonics:
John Lennon: Plastic Ono Band

12-3-2014 Japanese SHM SACD release, part of a 7 disc collection all released at same time.
This is stereo only. John's third studio album released in 1970, but is considered his first solo album.

Performance: This is my 4th review of this series and I really like this disc, the feel and the lyrics. It has a calming and melancholy feel for me. There are certainly some songs that have The Beatles feel to it, like Remember the 6th track and Well Well Well the 8th track. I of course was familiar with some of the tracks but I have never owned any version prior. Rolling Stone magazine 23rd of 500 most influential albums.
It is known The Beatles broke up April 1970 and this album released December 1970. I have read that John was in a bit of emotional pain at this time and clearly comes across in his lyrics touching on a variety of personal issues. Band members are Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono and Klaus Voormann. This performance is deep and my eyes teared on a couple of occasions.

Stereo Sonics: I think very good. As the other discs this is not a dynamically recorded powerhouse. The first track starts off with funeral bells ringing and considerable tape hiss but immediately stops and no tape hiss is heard again. I believe the bells where a cheap tape recorder recording and then just dubbed in. All tracks start and finish quietly and have good quiet space between tracks. Musical instruments resonate well, as an example when John hits the piano chord after he sings "I don't believe in Beatles" the chord sounds beautifully quiet as it fades out. There are many places like this including the final track My Mommy's Dead that is John and guitar that is echoed and ends a great reissue in my opinion.

Packaging: Single disc cardboard mini LP. Green disc, plastic liner with paper disc holder and all lyrics written on paper sleeve. Copy of John's handwriting "For Yoko with love from John 9/10/70. Mini paper Japanese booklet with Japanese writing/lyrics and English lyrics.

I am very happy to have ordered the John Lennon reissue SHM SACD series. A little pricey at $30.00 a pop but it clearly is helping me understand this great musician. The sound quality is wonderful and I can't believe anybody would think different.
