|Multi Grammy winning team establish HD surround sound production centre of excellence||
February 19, 2009
|The Grammy Awards have for several years recognised the rapidly emerging field of surround sound music recording, and also the extraordinary creativity required to construct these three dimensional recordings.
At this month’s 51st Grammy Awards presentation, the Grammy Award for Best Surround Sound Album went to the team that produced the Telarc Super Audio CD (SA-CD) release Mussorgsky: Pictures At An Exhibition; Night On Bald Mountain; Prelude To Khovanshchina; Michael Bishop, Engineer and Robert Woods, Producer.
Telarc has been through a major re-organisation recently, which has seen the entire Telarc Production Department leaving the company and establishing a new independent audio production company - Five/Four Productions, Ltd.
Whilst this team will continue to provide production services for Telarc/Head Up and Concord Music Group (its parent company), they are able to provide similar services to any production, on a global basis. Michael Bishop, Robert Friedrich, Bill McKinney and Thomas Moore, all former key production members of Telarc Records, are experts in new High Definition surround sound recording and mastering techniques.
When asked why anyone would start a production company in these difficult economic times, Five/Four’s Michael Bishop replied, “What better time to offer the services of the best audio production team in the business? The artists’ need to make recordings isn’t going away, but everyone is looking to work smarter with watching budgets more closely than ever. There’s little room for taking chances with a less-experienced recording crew.
Five/Four Productions commenced operation January 2009 recording a project with Franz Welzer-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra for Deutsche Gramophone. Recent and upcoming recordings are scheduled with Robert Spano and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra; Martin Perlman and the Boston Baroque Orchestra; Benjamin Zander and the Philharmonia Orchestra; Yolanda Kondonassis, Jahja Ling and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra; Paavo Järvi and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra; and jazz artists Hiromi Uehara, and John Pizzarelli.
The Five/Four Productions team specialises in full-service audio production, recording and mastering for CD, SA-CD, DVD, Blu-ray, LP, film and game soundtracks, and all music download formats. Five/Four Productions is fully equipped to handle live and studio sessions, and simple to complex audio productions including basic project planning, final master production and manufactured or consumer product. High resolution DSD, PCM and analogue recording technology is available for all recording projects.
Five/Four Productions technical services include recording studio, analogue and computer-based audio equipment maintenance, custom modifications and consultation services in addition to custom home theatre and sound system services.
“We live in revolutionary life-changing times in terms of the way we enjoy music at home,” stated Bishop. “The increasing trend towards home theatre systems provides us with a fantastic opportunity to provide the highest quality surround sound recording for the home.
“Whether it’s released on SA-CD or Blu-ray Disc, the album still needs expert recording and mastering to achieve the best result. This is what we have worked on for several decades within Telarc and now, through Five/Four Productions, we can offer the same support to music producers worldwide,” he concluded.
