Teresa, does this mean ALL the DMP discs are unedited DSD, including the Bob Mintzer disc seen on the link you posted? If so I'm straight to Amazon! Saw him playing a bass clarinet jazz improvisation once. Stunning, just stunning.
Having listened repeatedly to this selection of Wagner preludes and overtures, I wonder how many of those taking part in the discussion have actually done so.
This disc not only features some of the most stupendous orchestral playing, but also first-class sound. The recording offers glorious string tone, smooth and opulent, but the brass
For those who don't subscribe, Gramophone ran a comparative piece by Nalen Anthoni on the Mozart Clarinet Concerto in the February 2012 edition. Rates the Andrew Marriner performance "bland and insouciant." The writer liked the performance by Di Casola, but unlike Di Casola's performance of the Weber concertos, the Mozart concerto is on standard

Still have my Canare/Neutrik interconns but not for long, balanced King Cobras are replacing them, and M1000i 1m are coming for the 7.1 pre-outs, i already have the M1000i balanced for the stereo pre-outs.
So, even with the humble cables, the decoding in the player is superior to the DHC-9.9 fed by the Oppo 980.

ECM is very cagey about its engineering, but I have to believe their CDs have been issued in hi-res PCM. They are consistently great-sounding, with that distinctive, slightly resonant ECM sound, whether recorded in Oslo, New York (at Avatar), Turino etc.
How about some more solo piano ECMs in DSD-- Bley's Open, To Love, Jarrett's Facing You,
I feel most fortunate to have purchased and listened to the Herreweghe Schubert Symphony in C “The Great” (I'll avoid the numbers game) *before* I read Polly Nomial’s negative review here at SA-CD.net. I have certainly taken chances on recordings that have gotten less than stellar or mixed reviews. But a bare-knuckled *Not Recommended* as was
At last, someone talking real sense! For many years in my youth/twenties I played principal clarinet in a number of orchestras and gave many recitals. That experience of music is quite different again from listening in the audience. As Bruce points out, the sound varies depending where in the hall one sits. Reading many of the threads in this forum
I heard this live a few years ago in Symphony Hall, Boston. The Bass Clarinet opening was entrancing because of the power that sound broadcast throughout the hall. I never experienced that again really, until hearing this recording.
How utterly magnificent!
While talking about Aaron Copland, since I think Copland had some influence on Charles Camilleri...
Will Camilleri's Clarinet Concertino, with a hauntingly beautiful second movement, be something for Martin Fröst to record ?
"Doodling", huh? You made me laugh on that one - that's what I ended up having to do when I tried to play some of the clarinet runs in Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe the first time I saw it. I'm a bit chagrined to say I've never even heard of the original version of the Copland Conderto and that I missed Martin's first recording - based on the
You're right. Goodman requested changes towards the very end, when the clarinet - in the original version - had to play broken chords in the altissimo register of the clarinet in a prestissimo tempo. As it was written it is simply horrendously difficult, all but unplayable. So Copland, without changing the music as such, in the Final version put

Equalizers equal digital trickery with digital distortion added for good measure. BTW, most quality amplifiers do have balanced and unbalanced inputs. Not so many preamps, I'm afraid, but quite a few. As to the number of SACD players having more than one output, I have no idea. Mine does.
Perhaps a good subject for discussion here is the concept
Then your local store should order it from our distributor. We've had it for ages now.
The 1863 contains the Copland Clarinet Concerto, both in its final form and the "unplayable" original version (too difficult for Benny Goodman),
4 Hungarian Dances by Brahms, Lutoslawski: Dance Preludes, Hillborg: Peacock Tales, Piazzolla: Oblivion, G. Fröst:
Enjoyable, just a bit too populist for my taste. SACD sound is excellent, and really comes into its own in the quiet clarinet passages:
http://www.classical-cd-reviews.com/2011/08/fagerlund-clarinet-concerto-partita.html
One more thing: the typical dynamic range of acoustic music is around 40 dB. At a recent recording session of a clarinet/piano duo in a quiet hall when no one was making any noise, the meters were hovering at around - 40 dB - aircon was off, but the mics were still picking up (or generating, along with high-quality mic-pres) noise that was all but
I would LOVE to hear what could be done with an SACD reissue of the Columbia/Sony recording of the clarinet concerto with Robert Marcellus/Szell/ Cleveland (a cult status recording among clarinetists - or at least this one).
That be the one; and the performance of the "filler" (Contrasts for Violin, Clarinet and Piano) is my new standard - and this coming from a amateur performer/life-long afficionado of the composition.

ESSW-90051 Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 26 in D major, KV537 "Coronation" / Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major, KV488 - Friedrich Gulda / Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam / Nikolaus Harnoncourt (Warner/Teldec,
We went to Boston this weekend. The BSO played Mozart and Haydn with a VERY nice performance of the Clarinet concerto by principal clarinet William Hudgins. Then on Sunday Yuri Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic were in town. The concert began with Rimsky Korsakov's Russian Easter Overture, then Alisa Weilerstein was soloist in the
Wonderful news, Robert! I am looking forward to this one! What you say about the clarinet concerto reminds me of Magnus Lindberg's own clarinet concerto, a piece I adore and have listened to dozens of times. Seems to be contemporary composers have embraced the idea that beautiful is OK, again. A pity we had to live up with the idea that
Thanks for asking!
I was at an IAMA conference in Berlin, when I was stopped by Fagerlund's Publisher, who wanted me to listen to a tape. You have to understand that people in my position get "accosted" all the time, so much so that I hardly want to go to concerts anymore, but this particular person made a good case for a composer, whose name I
Ok, so I have finally found the time to write a list of the BIS recordings I have most enjoyed through many years.
The list is very subjective and incomplete. I do not attempt to give a final word on music, recordings or performances, it is just a collection based on my experiences. Hope it serves somebody to discover some new works or recordings.
Now that the suggestions thread is closed for further entries, I am pleased to post the list – below – of gaps in the SACD repertoire for concerti.
Many thanks for all your great suggestions! As well as some obvious picks, there is much here that is surprising or just plain left-field. Would anyone want it otherwise, though?
All in all, I think
OK, folks, thanks for all your great suggestions. Since the closing date is now upon us, I have finalised the list, which I am pleased to present below.
You may vote for your top picks is a separate thread specifically set up for this. NOT HERE, PLEASE!
Some thoughts to continue this thread:
1) General reactions to the list
2) Biasses and gaps
What a wonderful description! I played it once almost 40 years ago as a music student, and the bass clarinet part certainly wasn't anywhere near the difficulty level of the soloists :-) - the performance was at Temple University in Philadelphia and Lambert Orkis was the pianist if I remember correctly. I never moved on to the professional ranks and
And Rita? ;-) Thank you for the alternative recs. I've admired this concerto from the time I first heard/performed it as a music student (the bass clarinet part).
No idea. His recording of Holst works on SCRS 128 (The Lure, Ballet Music for Orchestra, etc.) is one of the great Lyritas and he conducts such interesting repertoire - I listened to his Hoddinott Clarinet and Harp Concertos on Lyrita CD just the other evening - another fine recording.
I share Sir Beagle's enthusiasm for this disc and the masterful performances by Annar Folleso; however, I would like to focus on the Contrasts for Clarinet, Violin and Piano since this was the composition that initially attracted me to this release. Contrasts is one of the gems of the clarinet repertoire. As an amateur clarinetist, I own a fair
Thank you. Kiitos kaunista sanastasi. Yes, I do. We plan to release the BIS-SACD-1707 in May this year.
Contains: Sebastian Fagerlund: Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra; Isola (for symphony orchestra); Partita (for large string orchestra and percussion).
Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra / Dima Slobodeniouk; Christoffer Sundqvist, clarinet
It was
It's a good point. Having attended the concert on Sunday, I played the disc last night and indeed some leading positions were different on the disc, especially the flute sited near the strings on Sunday but stage right on the recording and the cuckoo clarinet was more central on the recording.
Channel may want to comment on Ivan's apparent
I think it has great clarinet playing as well, and I must add that you're certainly no slouch yourself! (I've enjoyed a number of your performances over the years). I definitely need to acquire the Blomstedt as it's hard to imagine a better performance than Drucker's, especially the interplay with the snare drum - but you are obviously in a better
The Horenstein, Bernstein, and Blomstedt recordings of the 5th were the three best ones that I had heard; the Jarvi just didn't come close as a performance, to my ears, though the sound is good. I liked the overall sweep of the Blomstedt and the recorded sound was full and well-balanced (with the best rendition of the clarinet solo I have heard),
Were they seated differently than when they played the Pastoral last year in New York City? Here, the principal flute, oboe, and clarinet were seated in a row right in front of Fischer, the principal bassoon was seated half way back between the first violins and cellos to the left, and the second players of those sections were seated at the rear of
I don't buy SHM-SACDs due to their price; however, if they (or anyone else) released SACD versions of Berstein's Nielsen 5th, the 4th, and the Flute and Clarinet Concertos (featuring Julius Baker and Stanley Drucker) I would snatch them up immediately.
Dear Tom,
and here is the answer:
"There are two reasons.
Yes, one reason is exactly the one mentioned below - we cannot "trust" peoples center speakers. Home entertainment systems mainly see the center as a "voice" speaker. Music even in films oftentimes comes primarily over the main and surround speakers.
The other reason. Until today there
Cliburn was the pianist (and household name along with Ormandy, etc if one collected in US in the '70's), who introduced me to these works so it's really hard to know if I'm the dupe of "imprinting" here, but I still find him very enjoyable as re-released in the "Living Stereo" SACD series: Rach's 2nd/3rd, Prokofiev 3rd, and Tchaikovsky 1st.
I've
With this absolutely incredible Artist, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, there is, to my knowledge, no recording of this piece at all available.
Look, in principle I agree with you, but when we come up to the absolute top echelon of living Artists, we do what they want to do. Simple as that. It is such a privilege to record with a musician like that. And vice
Dear Mr Robert,
According to the sleeve notes of Martin Frost's latest album 'Frost & Friends" (BIS SACD 1823), his previous recording of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto sold more them 200,000 copies? That is certainly a very impressive figures as far a SACD release is concerned.

Ah but, the only way to know that would be to personally go to each different mastering suite and hear it for ones self.
I've known recording engineers for over 30 years.
One of them said he could hear which recording studio an album had been mixed in. He also knew the acoustics of many of the larger concert halls in the UK and could sometimes
By the way, Tom, I haven't forgotten your apologies from before. I appreciate it and do not in any way disparage your knowledge of the production process.
I just hate seeing some people (not all) attach their decisions mostly to a meter showing me what I "should" be hearing. It almost reminds me of the time years ago when I tried to find the

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Valery Gergiev shimmying his way through Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe. There he was, London’s loosest-limbed maestro, back on the Barbican podium (just about) with the London Symphony Orchestra, after a
The Maazel really captures the lower spectrum of the orchestra clearly on the Festivals and has a great soundstage and a fairly natural perspective to my ears. There just isn't much beauty or nuance in the string playing on the Pines, the brass is somewhat dry sounding, and Maazel's pacing keeps things pretty dry and clinical (on the Pines). The
I am curious if anyone is really listening closely for strictly musical values in recordings like this. I have probably 20 recordings of the Respighi trilogy, though only one of the Pines and Fountains on SACD (the Reiner). To my ears, there isn't any overall winner here. The Reiner had a strong orchestra from a technical standpoint, but the
Hello to all:
Two releases are coming from us for November and December of this year.
The first one is the reference NPM 1010. Autumn with works for clarinet trio by Brahms and Bruch for the first time together in SACD played B3 Classic Trio which releases their third CD. The second one is a World Premiere Recording of works for two pianos of
