Well, sometimes I'm a dunderhead. I've had a lifelong interest in the clarinet and still perform on occasion, but it was only recently that I finally got around to purchasing this recording of the Nielsen concerto. I'm literally astounded and have placed this performace at the head of the class, even above my cherished Stanley Drucker/New York
Hi,
I'd like to ask Pentaman if there exist quad recordings of any of the Brahms Quintets by Members of the Berlin Philharmonic Octet plus guest Werner Haas in the case of the piano quintet.
They've been my favourite recordings of these pieces for a number of years and appeared on a Philips Duo which the Penguin Guide called one of the finest
I usually get mine from Arkiv Music or Crotchet. The latter is less expensive than the former, but I just bought the Brahms Clarinet Quintet from Arkiv because Crotchet (and Presto Classical) didn't have it. Most of my sacd purchases seem to be chamber works these days, so I would be in bad shape were it not for Praga.
P.S. : anybody know where I
I recently got the Martinu discs on Praga and am in love with the Piano Quintet/Quartet disc! I can only second the opinion of the other eight listeners who recommend this as well as the two reviewers who are quite enthusiastic. This is simply a wonderful disc!
If you know Martinu from the Symphonies or the Frescoes, you will probably like his
Dear Seventh Taylor and Rusal,
Much as I totally agree with your wishes to have these superb Hyperion issues in SACD, it is now absolutely clear that this is not going to happen.
Last month, I had cause to ’phone Hyperion (they are incredibly helpful about replacing damaged booklets), and took the opportunity, yet again, to discuss the

from a quality seller and Lubeck is as close to Sweden (Sterling) as you would want ?
Looking at the Beethoven disc, the back calls it "Concerto for Clarinet (Violin) and Orchestra in D major op. 61 (Arr. Mikhail Pletnev)". I don't think that's quite as bad as this case, though it's still a point, especially as the spine and the cover don't mention the violin.
Of course, if one wants to get nitpicky, how about the many discs like
Well, how about this:
http://www.andante.com/article/article.cfm?id=15566&highlight=1&highlightterms=&lstKeywords=
Pletnev even changed parts of the orchestral score (see the review) + PLEASE SEE THE COVER IN ATTACHMENT: it says 'Mozart * Beethoven: Clarinet Concertos' on it.
Without even mentioning on the cover that it is 'arr. Pletnev' OR that
To add on this..
why is Schoenberg allowed to call his arrangement 'Brahms' 5th Symphony'? He wasn't authorized by Brahms either... So, who draws the line between Schoenberg and in this case Lazic?
Where would be the line? Yes, Schoenberg is one of the greatest, but how about, let's say Ligeti - would we allow him to do this? Or Kurtag? Or Eötvös
Well, I wish that I hadn't drunk a glass of wine for the first time in months, and feeling a bit tipsy because of it, but I'll try to answer nevertheless.
May I say that I think there is an absolute WORLD of difference between this post and the one that somewhat raised my hackles. I am not saying that I agree 100%, but the way it is being written,
No, there's absolutely nothing wrong with making new arrangements of old pieces. I for one GREATLY enjoy many a transcription and arrangement, from Beethoven's VC on clarinet to a disc I got the other day that has Finlandia for cello and piano.
The issue with using "#3" though, as others said, is the dumbness that implies it's official somehow.
It is great to see discussions starting up about this new arrangement from Dejan. There will be many more commments after the cd is released in January. I hope though that before one draws any conclusions please read Dejan's thoughts on this below and hopefully get a chance to hear this performance.

Johannes Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 3 in
As a collector on a budget, I spend a lot of time searching for the best value for my money. That said, it is very easy to fall into the trap (as I believe Rammiepie and others have done) of believing "because I found a bargain price, that represents the true value" of a product.
I consistently buy Bis discs for around $12 and PenaTones for around

The great voices of Sinatra, Torme, and Gaye have more depth and focus than almost anyone else (direct and soulful). The 2L Grieg choral recording has great depth,
IsoMike, Yes some single instruments very OK Violins guitar Harp Clarinet etc. but the system completely falls down on what I have heard so far from full Orchestra & Piano, so I would not be inclined to purchase any Isomike recordings.
Thanks for the clarification. I have not heard the 2008A test disc so cannot comment; however, the sonics of the two discs I own (Haydn Quartets and music for clarinet and strings) are significantly better than OK IMO.
I am pleased to announce that after about a year, this disc is properly listed on Amazon. Shortly after the release the artist listed it and then somehow the seller account was corrupted (or some other weirdness) and then Amazon cancelled the seller account but left the listing. More than that the listing was locked, and eventually Amazon said that
Let me guess: 24-16=8. 8/16=.50. Therefore, 24-bit recordings have 50% more resolution than 16-bit.
Actually, 24-bit recordings have 256 times the resolution of 16-bit. The math is: 2^8 = 256; that is, 2 to the 8th power or 2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2. Each extra bit doubles the recording resolution.
I seriously doubt anyone could hear 50% higher resolution.
Just played that particular BIS SACD (BTW: it is Frost's performances of Mozart Clarinet Concertos). Definitely no more 'pops and clicks' from end to end on the MC layer. Oppo seems to have fixed it. I'm more than thrill :)
Hi there,
yes, she is rather amazing, that girl is. The Nielsen Flute Concerto has been recorded with Sharon and the Residentie Orchestra in The Hague, Holland, under Neeme Järvi. Due for release in about a year's time on BIS-SACD-1679. The Clarinet Concerto we already have, twice, with Olle Schill and the Gothenburg SO under Myung-Whun Chung on
I actually have a CD of Looney Tunes cartoon soundtracks that someone gave me, does that count? I'm happy to add something constructive: although it might be old news, Sharon Bezaly's recording of the Prokofiev Flute Sonata (one of the "holy grails" for flautists) on BIS-1429 is the finest performance and recording of the work I've ever heard and
Thank you for your review, Mr. Miller. We (the Van Swieten Society) are happy that our recording has been received well. Allow me to rectify a few small details:
We are sorry to have ommitted details about our instruments. Frank van de Brink's historical clarinet was made by Dutch builder Peter van der Poel. My fortepiano is a Viennese original by
Stanley Drucker ended his 60 year career with the NYPO last season with a series of glorious performances of the Copeland clarinet concerto. Would BIS be interested in recording any clarinet repertoire with him?
That's very odd, since I remember the artist comments after the recordings that - at BIS recordings - the piano really (for once) is reproduced clearly and not taken back to "help" the soloist. Anyway, to talk about a "soloist" and an accompanist in this kind of music is anatema to me - in Brahms, if anything, the piano is even more important than
I recently bought two chamber music SACDs; 'Bezaly, Brautigam - Masterworks for Flute and Piano' and 'Brahms: Clarinet Sonatas & Trio - Fröst, Pöntinen, Thedéen'
There is no doubt that they are spectacular performances, but piano sounds watered-down which is disappointing. I find myself only listening to the soloist and forgetting about what the
Am I to take this to mean that you are NOT in favor of as realistic a capture of dynamic range as is possible - in the name of "comfort in a domestic setting" If so, then yes, we are at cross purposes there!
Otherwise I agree with you that recording is artifice. It always has been and probably always will be. Unless the Calrec Soundfield
Can I just jump in at this point to say I have now had a response from BBC Producer Peter Thresh. He says sorry and yes they should have mentioned the BIS Mendelssohn disc was an SACD.
I see above that someone suggests that 'The Whirling Dance' and the 'Weber Clarinet Quintet and Concertos' seem to be "just soaked in artificial reverb". I have
I wish to reply first to the following excerpted from bissie's response to hiredfox, the post preceding this one, where he states:
"Because, if you call our products wretched, then, by extension, so are we."
No, Robert!
This stuff is uncalled for! I am very much an admirer of yours, and a supporter, as my now 37 BIS SACDs will attest - but you
On May 19th Philip Glass’ record label Orange Mountain Music released for the first time the complete original soundtrack from the 1983 Godfrey Reggio film KOYAANISQATSI.
Its serendipity that I just came across the official MGM YouTube link of KOYAANISQATSI to celebrate — universally accessible visual reference, uncut (1:26:05)
Yes indeed,
I have already said that I can´t always hear the difference between a pure DSD and a PCM recording on my home equipment.
Nor have I ever had the chance to really compare the formats at actual recording sessions .
And right now I have to admit that one of my favourite recordings on SACD is the very good Resphighi disc on MDG which
We recorded 2 CD:s (not SACD:s) with music by the really exquisite composer Christopher Rouse. One has been released (BIS-CD-1386) with the Clarinet Concerto and Symphony 1. The second one (BIS-CD-1586) with the Flute Concerto, Symphony 2 and Rapture, will be released in October this year. The Flute Concerto's last movement was the last thing I
First of all, we wish to say thanks to this site, and specially to Geohominid and Polly Nomial for their kind reviews about our humble publications, and we wish to extend some open invitations to any one who wish to publish a review of our records here or in any other site, in order to send complimentary copies of them. The sound is smooth and crystal clear. The mellow clarinet is up front, without a lot of growl, in the usual style of Acker Bilk. The SACD was pressed in Germany by someone who knew how to bring out the best from the source material and did provide excellent sound quality.
Top Music has done a fine job in bringing the smooth jazz sounds of Acker Bilk to this SACD. For a relaxing trip down memory lane to the 60's, 70's, and 80's with the clarinet of the Bilkmeister as your guide, this could be a ticket to ride.
The Bis is an rbcd, so it's worth duplicating. On Bis the violin concerto is without the cuts made later, small matter but anyway. The piece works better with the cuts. Linde didn't write a large amount of music as he died so young, and I absolutely recommend the three sacd's from Swedish Society. I also look forward to the fourth as I long to hear
Sadly, the pair of you are damping my resolve. BTW, what did you think about Jón Leifs' Edda on BIS? I also would be hard pressed to locate my copies of the Weingartner symphonies!
BTW how do you guys regard Finzi's Cello, Violin and Clarinet Concertos? His Symphony? There is where I would rather Chandos had expended their energies and resources -
Alan,
Do you listen to Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, Shostakovitch or to Elvis? If it is Elvis, I am sure that (although the Seventh Taylor would disagree) plain old stereo is best for the stuff you listen to.
But when I am talking about multi-channel I am talking about recordings made by Telarc, BIS, Chandos, PentaTone, and others of real
I am very happy that BIS has recently recognized the talent of John Williams and released the tuba concerto (on CD) and now this piece that is derived from his soundtrack to Catch me if you can. John Williams is mainly know for his film music (Star wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter etc), but is a classical composer as well with a lot of solo
I admire your principles - and those of other like-minded posters here - but let me try another tack. Take the Aho example I mentioned earlier. BIS has recorded all this composer's works but only the Clarinet Concerto and 'Luosto' symphony are available in SACD. In an act of self denial you would ignore the other - superb - RBCDs in the series,
instrumental: Bach cello suites ; Lipkind ; Edel
chamber: Boccherini ; Lislevand, Savall etc. ; Alia vox
concerto: Mozart clarinet concerto ; Martin Fröst ; BIS
chamber orchestra: Mozart Notturno KV 286 etc. ; Alia vox
orchestra: Debussy La mer ; BIS
passion: Bach Matthew passion ; Linn
jazz: Miles Davis Kind of blue (I don't listen to jazz
Haven't heard Thea King's Hyperion disc so all I can say is the new BIS Crusell SACD gives much pleasure and I would recommend it even to someone who wants to start a classical collection. Must admit don't recall ever hearing anything by the Czech composer Krommer. However, given your enthusiasm for his clarinet concerti I shall have to rectify
I listened to the Hyperion CD of Crusell (Thea King I think) a few years ago and didn't like it much. Is there reason to believe this one is any better?
Now if Frost would record all the clarinet concerti of Krommer (though that'd need two discs at least) I'd buy it in a heartbeat...
You might want to add Martin Fröst's new disc of Crusell Clarinet Concertos to your wish list my arrived last week and I can heartily recommend it!

My two cents having just bought the Bis-SACD containing Weber's clarinet concertos (a wonderful record, great playing and a very realistic multichannel sound): these kind of records increase my threshold on buying ordinary cd's, although that occasionally happens. On the other hand, if a sacd exists, I am willing to explore more unknown territory
Hi Robert,
In the last 2 years 90% of the 250 titles I bought were SACDs and 10% LPs. For instance, yesterday I placed an order at acoustic sounds for 26 SACDs where 11 of them were BIS SACDs:
1) Ronald Brautigam, Beethoven: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 3
2) Martin Gester, Handel: Twelve Grand Concertos
3) Martin Frost - Von Weber: Clarinet
Unlike many here, I buy lots of 'normal' CDs...many of them BIS. I buy the Sibelius Edition religiously, will probably get the rest of the Ogawa-Debussy series if vol. 5 ever comes along (I only have vol. 4), and have the three Villa-Lobos Choros CDs somewhere over the Atlantic...
That said, there have been at least a couple BIS SACDs I've bought
Hi Robert. I have about two dozen BIS discs, of which five are SA-CDs.
I would not have purchased the Nielsen and Aho clarinet concertos, Faure and Durufle Requiems, or Suzuki's Bach Mass in B-Minor if they were only RBCDs. And of course I wish all the Aho discs were SA-CDs! The Luosto is magnificent!
The SQ of all your discs is superb.
And
Whilst not all may be new, these are the best SA-CDs I purchased in 2008:
Aho - Symphony No. 12 (Storgards/Lahti SO/BIS)
Aho and Nielsen - Clarinet Concertos (Frost/Vanska/Lahti SO/BIS)
Bach - Brandenburg Concertos (Fasolis/I Barocchosti/Arts Music)
Bach - Mass in B-Minor (Suzuki/BCJ/BIS)
Bach - Six Suites for Cello (Suzuki/Deutsche Harmonia
Well this is a surprise.
It really just prooves a point in a sense, from other threads. This is the third recording of this piece, ever, and the second on SACD; the sheer randomness of what music gets to SACD and what doesn't makes limiting one's buying to SACDs pretty weird in my mind.
Really...two recordings of Mass, but not of the clarinet
I have now this disc, but I am a bit puzzled. The first violin sound almost as if it sits to the right, but generelle it is very difficult to pinpoint the location of the instruments. After some listening I concluded that there is a lot of reflexions, sound from the first violin ricocheing from the right wall, making it sound as if it sits on the
