LAS VEGAS (CES, Booth #N109), Jan. 10, 2003 - Sony Music Entertainment (SME) today announced it will be releasing a new series of classic albums by Columbia Records artist Bob Dylan on hybrid Super Audio CD (SACD) this Fall. The announcement was made by Jeff Jones, Senior Vice President, Legacy Recordings during a special SACD reception sponsored
Thanks, zomax.
I have previously considered picking up the Living Stereo issue of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and will probably go ahead and do so. You're right - the price is right on those discs.
So far, I have ordered, but not yet received:

I consider myself to be semi-illiterate when it comes to orchestral/classical music, but I can easily pick out my favourite SACDs from my collection. Although my hi-res orchestral/classical collection is dominated (by about 4 to 1) DVD-A against SACD, these are my favourite SACDs so far:-

If Neeme Jarvi is not your cup of tea, Allegro Media Group will be importing the Exton's Sibelius Seven Symphonies with Vladimir Ashkenazy conducting the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra for $19.99 per SACD or $79.96 for all 4 SACDs.
They are DSD recorded plus they have the bonus of not only all 7 symphonies but also Finlandia, Karelia
What a load of bollocks. Mixed up fact with garbage. Goulash. Why should people have to dissect such piffle? Hmm? You've been around here long enough to get your facts straight ... and yet??!
So, let's undo your mess ... statement by statement ...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Danielle Gatti. His performances in New York over the last fourteen years or so, have been filled with nuance, with an emphasis on the lyrical line and a wide range of expression, coupled with a great deal of rhythmic energy. His Mahler 6 with the New York Philharmonic was riveting, his Respighi and Tchaikovsky
Also there is oval reverberant Royal Albert Hall and others dozens of music rooms in UK. But the SACD format is just One, cost nothing Sir Paul talk about the SACD format is Radio/TV show or in a newspaper!!
Iam overestimating Sir Paul, he is a musician, not a musiclover, maybe he do not need listen music at all as we mere mortals!
Although perhaps not appropriate for this thread, I would put in a plug for the LPO and their in-house label of the same name, which has released some SA-CD's in the past and may do so again.
Their preferred venue, the newly refurbished Royal Festival Hall, sounds spectacular on RBCD, much better than the Barbican in my opinion. I look forward to
Briefly the answer is 'Yes' not only do we pay VAT & duty on imports but also the UK Royal Mail levies a substantial "handling charge" which one cannot avoid as well. Coupled with an extremely weak Pound (v Dollar) such transactions make little sense these days. Individual SACD's get through unmolested by customs so buying then in the US is
Hi Emaidel,

This sentence does not make sense to me. Do you mean the strings are much smoother than they would be if you let the sunlight in?
At a recent concert here in Berlin with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Charles Dutoit I noticed that the strings are not always smooth, but sometimes harsh and aggressive. Perhaps this does not fit in
Next time I go to the Royal Opera House - in December, as it happens - I will ask them to turn out the lights for me. And perhaps they'll let me move around so I can find a 'sweet spot' (might be difficult without lights, though).

Can not recommend any SACD of Nielsen fourth, do not know of any but I am waiting.
I have several complete Nielsen symphony cycles on CD, my first set, Blomstedt/SFS on London, very good performances the sound is good but nothing special.
Another set is on Chandos, Bryden Thomson/Royal Scottish Orchestra, this one is a bit better recorded with
Steve,
Your review is puzzling to me. I have the Reiner recording and while the performance is great the recording strikes me as being only fairly good - not nearly as good or vivid as the Leibowitz. Now there is no question that the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is a much superior ensemble than the Royal Philharmonic, but it's a pretty fine effort
I received this disc yesterday and I would like to give you my opinion. First, I paid a premium price, almost 40.00$ including shipping from Analogue Productions. Was It worth it? Not in my opinion. It is a two channel SACD from a 1962 recording. There is a lot of instrument "spot-lighting" which some may enjoy but, I don't. To be fair, instrument
Thanks, Krisjan!
Reviewing this cycle has been a labour of love; I shall be uploading 7 & 4 shortly, and the new 9 is in the Post to me, but unfortunately is held up for the moment in the UK Royal Mail's industrial disputes.
Regarding the Vänskä cycle, I have great respect for it, and started off by running the Järvi side by side, but found that
I just received that very SACD, having ordered it directly from Hyperion in England. An "action" on the part of the Royal Mail delayed delivery by about a week, but it arrived safe and sound nonetheless. The music is simply gorgeous stuff, much of which can bring tears to one's eyes, and the Polyphony performance is very, very good. The Spartanburg
The recent arrest of a major computer fraud "artist" revealed that literally millions of cards have been compromised through multiple retailers. While Amazon was not on the lists I've seen, Barnes and Noble was and many people who use one also use the other, so that's a possible source. For the cardholder this is a royal pain in the butt, but for
I would disagree with you - certain venues do have a soundstage. Listening to the R30 Rush concert DVD, for example, recorded in Frankfurt's Festhalle, one can discern an echo and reverberation. The DVD of this fantastic concert sounds acceptable, even in Dolby Digital 5.1 (lossy) sound. I would expect other venues, such as the Royal Albert Hall,
Thomas, I only mentioned him as the poster already had it on LP. JB's Mahler does sound pioneering these days; there's something quite mesmerising about his 6th, and I have live accounts of the 4th (BBCSO in Prague) and 3rd on BBC Legends. The orchestral playing in the studio releases of 5 and 6 really isn't top class, and the live Berlin account
Received my copy over the weekend and played it last evening. First impressions (HQ stereo) are of technical excellence on the part of the orchestra and an absolutely superb, lifelike recording in brilliant technicolor 3-DSD albeit set well back in the sound stage. They are over there and seem slightly remote but the acoustic is excellent and for
Trygve Madsen (b. 1940) -- 24 Preludes & Fugues for piano (2L)
If you ever thought to yourself that Shostakovich's 24 preludes & fugues need a bit more jazz, then Mr. Madsen's set will satisfy. They are clearly inspired by Shosty's 24, but are more wistful overall in tone. Superb native (5.1) use of subwoofer, too, in case it needs a
Here is a salutory follow-up which really does reinforce the message about supporting the format and getting SACD releases while you can.
Having been thrown by the Harmonia Mundi deletions I had discovered, I decided to look further into HM items that were on my list, including several Mozart operas conducted by Rene Jacobs. High on this list was
The time to visit England and London in particular is late August or early September, as the BBC Proms at The Royal Albert Hall approach their climax. This is the time of year when the Greatest Orchestras of the World, one after another, play to packed houses and we lucky people who live here just turn up on the night, pay our £5 and be rewarded by
There have been quite a lot of negative things said in different threads here both about too much of Mahler´s music being released on SACD and also some things said about BIS´s choice of sampling rates.
I chimed in here and there, mainly in the technical sampling rate discussions.
Regarding Mahler´s music I love it far too much to have reached
Would that be referring to our Mahler 9, with the Royal Stockholm PO under Alan Gilbert (the new Chief of the New York PO)? At over 82 minutes on a single Hybrid SACD, and with some terrific music-making and sound to boot, that's good value for money. End advert.
OK, OK, I'll come clean.
This is the entire play-through from the very first
As many of you know, The European distributor that was importing in Exton SACD's at a reasonable price is no longer dealing with them. From what I understand it has to do with long delays in filling back-orders and not answering emails.
In the meantime Exton, Triton and Cryston continue to release DSD recorded SACDs at an amazing pace, Exton now
I hope some of you managed to go along to the Royal Albert Hall last evening for BBC Prom 44. Ivan Fischer and his Budapest Festival Orchestra were in magnificent form; even more assured and accomplished than when last I saw them at the Concertgebouw three years ago. They fully deserve all the success that is coming their way and for once
While I genuinely believe that SACD's have the potential to wipe the floor with most RBCD's, that's not always the case, as almost all of us here know. Here are a few Telarc RBCD's to take a listen to;
Prokofiev's "Alexander Nefsky," with the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Andre Previn, CD # 80143. This was the only Telarc CD that used the
I might give the Gergiev a spin for fun -- sounds like you wouldn't want it to be your only Mahler 8 though!
If they'd wanted a grand space and grand sound, why didn't they choose the Royal Albert Hall instead of St Paul's - it seems the ideal space for something like this. I think the RAH is much maligned as a venue, but I think it sounds
The Horenstein on BBC Legends RBCD is very special. He was the one who taught that orchestra the work. I recall reading, somewhere, that is was that very rare occasion where an unfamiliar work (THEN!!!) was given this rare performance and the electricity in the air still is apparent in the CDs. The Royal Albert Hall organ is wonderful at the end.
"To show off the new system, Marantz Brand Ambassador Ken Ishiwata looked long and hard at the Mordaunt-Short speaker range the company distributes in Europe, and came up with an amazing 'stacked pair' configuration of the Performance 6 loudspeakers, with one of the hi-tech floorstanders inverted above the other in a custom-built frame.

I've already posted my tremendous enthusiasm for the new SACD of Bernstein's "Mass," but I ordered three other SACD's from ArkivMusic at the time, and would like to comment on them as well.
"Song of Songs" on Harmonia Mundi, by the English choral group, Stile Antico, is just plain gorgeous. Gorgeous singing; gorgeous music; gorgeous sonics.
Don't say that, actually, Sorabji does have his followers, as does Fredrik Ullén. The first CD sold quite well, considering the repertoire, and keeps selling (not enough to break even yet, but much better than I thought). I believe the second CD will help the previous one. And - we'll have the market to ourselves - I honestly don't think there is a
I can't really dispute anything you say. It's all so frustrating. I have just returned from visiting the Royal Opera House and looking at the list of performances on Blu Ray - mostly with DTS HD and 24 Bit PCM stereo - I'm inclined to jump in and enjoy those while I wait for markets and people to sort themselves out. Apologies for my unsubtle
"The Royal SQ" aka [t=4059] is a favourite disc, especially the Bacewicz. [t=4060] is interesting stuff, sits well with Chopin and Liszt. --And as Peter said, ordering from BeArTon is a pleasure.
I was really looking forward to this SACD, ordered via Ebay and it finally arrived today, new & sealed:
First thing I noticed that there is no mention of it being a SACD from the outside of the package. The sleeve states for label info: (p) 2003 Steamhammer (a division of SPV GmbH)- SPV 093-74882 3CD (Made in Germany)which makes me think that they

There have been times in the past when I wished I had been "in your shoes"
But this is not.
I have enjoyed many, but not all of your SACD releases, both musically and as recordings , but I find it quite disturbing that you did take that retrograde step you obviously did, for economic reasons, when you abandoned true hi-rez recording
Ultrasonic frequencies can only be heard if you are:

If you want that degree of realism may I suggest you go to a concert? Recordings can only ever be an approximation of the real thing and the success of the home listening experience will always be determined by compromises of one kind or another.

The US mail is not quite as economical as UK's Royal Post but triple the price of the SACD is unbelievable! I order a lot from the UK and the shipping charges from the UK to US are usually less
The website's still a nightmare. I tried to order the SACD of the Brahms Requiem again today, and still wound up getting nowhere. I had sent two emails to customer service, as well as one to the individual who works for them and listed his address on this site, but none of the three have been answered.
I then called the BSO's number in
Coincidentally, there's some great news this week:
ABC will perform 'The Lexicon of Love' live in its entirety, together with the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Anne Dudley and with an introduction by Trevor Horn, at the Royal Albert Hall in London, April 8th 2009. I wonder if this time it will be properly preceded by the 'Overture'. On the
