BIS provides this synopsis of this recording: Can one really present "the greatest work in the entire history of music" in a shortened version? In fact one can. And very successfully. The reviews of this SACD are consistently glorius, but IMO they're off base. The orchestra and choir truly do sound like they're in two different venus, which apparently they are! The orchestra sounds like it is miked pretty well and on my system I heard a well defined and articulate soundstage. But ... more

The SFSO SACD version has a wonderful three dimensional sound. In terms of sonics the Leonard Berstein NY Philharmonic 1988 RBCD version sounds a bit harsh by comparison, but it is a much more involving presentation and contains much greater energy, especially during the ending climax which has a ... more

Although I very much enjoy this SACD, I didn't find it as compelling in terms of the performance as the "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" RBCD. The SACD does improve the width and depth of the soundstage although it still suffers from and unrealistic RBCD high end at times.
