Review by hiredfox April 4, 2009

This was a legendary recording when it first appeared with the Adagio spotlighted for it's achingly beautiful string playing. What went wrong in the transfer? Patently this does not sound in any way like a SACD and even the performance has been diminished by whatever re-processing has been ... more

Review by beached April 1, 2009

I think the last review is totally misleading. It does not resemble the Cure. I do not like the Cure that much. This is an outstanding release and I wish I had bought it earlier. Great sonics. Some wonderful low rumbling bass for added atmosphere on some tracks. A couple of extra tracks on the CD ... more

The surround mix is just the DVD-A surround mix, converted to DSD. Since the DVD-A is out of print, this is good for those who didn't grab it the first time around (though the SACD lacks the *stunning* DVD-A bonus track surround mix of 'Lucky Man'). I like the surround mix well enough, but would ... more

  Review by OPSMAN1 March 30, 2009

Awesome! Though not a huge country fan the entire CD is just plain Awesome. Allison's voice is incredible, the steel guitar is crisp and clean and the drums...well...they sound like drums. Pixies: Surfer Rosa        (2 of 2 found this review helpful)
Review by Beastmaster March 28, 2009

Very pleased with this release. I first listened to the Pixies from the Fight Club soundtrack, and I will say this SACD done by none other than MFSL is lightyears beyond my first experience. It's tight, clean and punchy. The haunting background vocals on Where is my Mind raises goosebumps.

Review by Oakland March 28, 2009

Even though I am an enthusiastic fan of full range classical pipe organ and own a sizable number of organ recordings, listen to organ music live 5 or 6 times a year, I understand completely that it's a niche within a niche of classical music and that much of it, even to me, can fall flat.   Review by Oakland March 28, 2009

The dearth of quality and quantity of SACDs outside of the classical and jazz genre, most oft mentioned Rock, has been sharply voiced in SA-CD circles and for very palpable reasons. Frankly, in this remarkable SACD we have in our hands one of the most germane issues ever. Dating from 1959, this Russian concert allows us to hear and savor an atypical "Incomplete" by Schubert in which, as Pierre-Emile Barbier notes: "Mravinsky, while respecting the continuity of the melody, almost always adagio, gives the work once again its natural structure in three episodes by ... more

This is a 2001 pure DSD recording. I think it is a fine and musical performance. EXQUISITE. I feel that the only thing you may not like is the style. It does come across as a little aggressive in places. This is a well known classic rock album that includes some of Aerosmith's most legendary tracks. If you're familiar with this album I dont feel the need to dissect every single track. You already know them. This is a very decent transfer to dsd of this album. The music has presence and weight and ... more
Leo Kottke: 6 and 12 String Guitar        (1 of 1 found this review helpful)
Review by analogue March 6, 2009

I love guitar music especially if it's acoustic. This album is considered a classic folk guitar album and has a rather large cult following since it's release. The style is of the fingerpicking variety. It's folky with a touch of county and "mountain music" sound and beautifully played. The ... more

I like Dolly Parton. I took a chance on this Dolly Parton sacd when I discovered that it was a dsd recording of her new music. The sound quality is top notch. Parton's voice is as good now as it's ever been. She sounds exactly the same to my ears. This is one of the reaosns I like this sacd so ... more

This is a truly great and well known rock album that has been transferred to dsd. There were some wasted opportunities in the beginning of sacd when it first came out. Some of the rock titles available were dreadful and a waste of money. This might have prevented people from taking the chance with ... more

Shaft - Isaac Hayes        (2 of 2 found this review helpful)
Review by analogue March 6, 2009

This is one of three Isaac Hayes sacd's on the market. I believe it also has the best sound quality of the three. This recording is actually a re-recording. The music heard in the film was of a sketchy quality and does not have the completeness of sound found here. So this sacd is the original ... more
Weinberg: Cello Sonatas, String Trio - Kanka, Coelho, Beethoven String Trio          (5 of 7 found this review helpful)

Neglected in the west, the Russian composer of Polish origin Mieczyslaw Weinberg or Vainberg (1919-1996) is nonetheless the author of an important catalog of five hundred works, among which twenty-two symphonies, seventeen string quartets, orchestral suites, piano sonatas, seven operas, one hundred ... more

I felt inspired to bring this disc to the fore once again. It is absolutely amazing. If you love Shostakovich or feel tempted to try his symphonies then I am compelled to recommend this disc to you. The 5th is most comprehensive and accessible, while the 9th is very entertaining. The coupling is ... more

So this is how good recorded music can sound on a home system! How far we have come following Edison's invention! Considering the huge scale of this work, this must surely be a state-of-the-art production. The thought crossed my mind that listening to this was better than attending a live concert. ... more

Do I need to even say that this is a landmark rock album from the early 70's, one of the highest selling albums ever created and loved all over the world by people that don;t even like rock and roll???? I have read so many reviews about this sacd and I won't touch on any of them. People who love ... more

Wow. If you have interest in purchasing a Mario lanza album I would recommend this one to you without any hesitation whatsoever. And in fact you get two Lanza albums for the price of one. Lanza's voice is stupendous and is rendered here with great power and presence. The orchestral music is very ... more

I was really quite surprised and impressed with this sacd. I can tell you without a doubt that in the early days of sacd certain Company;s released a lot of stinkers that had no business being released and called sacd's. They basically lied to us and stole our money. And then they have the nerve to ... more

I'm not going into to much detail about opera music in general. I think if you are looking at these reviews I don;t need to tell you how beautiful this music is. A compilation of Miss. Moffo's vocals from different opera's. Her voice is a thing of intense beauty and is rendered here in all of it's ... more

Ray Sings, Basie Swings - Ray Charles        (1 of 1 found this review helpful)
Review by analogue March 4, 2009

In the vaults they discovered the voice of Ray Charles isolated on some master tape. His voice was of excellent quality. The music of the back up musicians was unusable. So the studio had an interesting idea. They brought in the most recent incarnation of the Count Basie band and recorded music ... more
Beck: Sea Change      (4 of 5 found this review helpful)
Review by analogue March 3, 2009

Several years ago I would not have believed that this album was as terrific as it is.I would never have bought this kind of music. Apparently Beck strayed away from his usual style and tried something new. That "something new" makes for a very terrific album. For one it is highly atmospheric ... more
